A topic I think we've discussed...

Post by Reverenddel »

Veterans have been very hesitant about getting mental health involved in PTSD, and other issues, because they don't want to have their firearms/Firearm's rights removed permanently.

And when you go there, you have to APPEAL to get them back.

What's the discussion on this? People need help, but they do not need to lose a right to get it.

That's like taking away the right to vote because you have incontinence, and cannot stand in a line.

And that is why due process is so important in this country. If your PTSD is bad enough that you've been adjudicated mentally defective then you do need to be prohibited from gun ownership.

As you've pointed out though, too many people avoid getting the help they need in fear of some politician's decree that will strip them of their rights.

It is worse than you think, there are cases of veterans being denied the right to purchase firearms, not because the were adjudicated as dangerous to themselves or others, but because they had a court appointed trustee to help manage their finances. In some of those cases, it was the result of an IED creating a short term memory loss that would lead to people not remembering whether they paid a bill or not.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

I'll stand up for a veteran any day, they've done more for this country than the asshats in washington have!
