A Craigslist Alternative

Post by SHMIV »

My buddy just stumbled upon this website:

http://richmond.backpage.com/

Looks like they are trying to compete with Craigs List. I posted the Richmond page, but it covers the country, and Canada.

I was curious, so I checked out their terms of service:

http://richmond.backpage.com/classifieds/TermsOfUse

And, I found this:

"18. Posting any material advertising weapons the use, carrying, or advertising of which is prohibited by applicable federal, state, or local law. You are solely responsible for complying with any and all laws and/or regulations applicable to the transfer of firearms under both applicable local, state and federal laws. The transfer of firearms is heavily regulated and restricted, and failure to strictly comply with all such laws is a serious crime and may result in criminal prosecution. All transfers of firearms, whether by sale, lease or loan, including private transactions, must go through a licensed firearms dealer."

So, looks like one may buy/sell/trade firearms through that site, unlike Craigs List. Although, it does look like they misunderstand a point of law, or two.

Yeah...there are some things advertised (much more blatantly) on Backpage that you may not want SWMBO to see.

Caveat Emptor.

How is this site (vagun) for sales? I am WTS, but wonder if there is enough traffic here?

The forum? It's possible to buy and sell, here. I've seen a few bought and sold here.

My main purpose of this thread was not to endorse Backpage, but just to point out its existence. I found it interesting that there was a CL competitor that had a somewhat friendlier gun policy, so I shared it.

The friend who made me aware of it has since browsed through it more than I have, and read the terms of use more thoroughly than I (I just skimmed through to the part about firearms; I wanted to see if they allowed gun sales or not), and he noted that a great many ads seemed to violate the terms of use, which made him wonder if the site was an FBI fishin' hole.

I've bought a couple of things from folks here. This is more like a "gunshow" than a "Gunshop".

Armslist, Va GunTrader, they're more gunshop oriented sites.

Here? It's "Hey (insert members name), you still have that .357 you didn't want? You wanna sell it?"

I haven't met many members here (knowingly. I probably know all of you through gunshows), but I wouldn't hesitate to sell a known member anything.

Oh, yeah, Rev, any active member here, that's been around a while, I'd gladly do business with.

when I see notice of scam postings, they are usually 20:1 for armslist vs everything else combined.

gunbroker seems much less scam filled, and seems to police its members well enough that the signal to noise ratio is very good.

I've used vaguntrader with reasonable success, but as you get away from the higher popularity items, you need something with more buyers/sellers.

Generally the buying deals are better on the smaller boards, and the selling is faster/easier on the big sites.

I have bought and sold quite a few firearms and lots of ammo here. I like dealing with VGOF members and people that think like our members. Never have any BS and all do exactly what they say !
