Savage Arms - Gold Wing 12gauge O/U

Post by jadedone4 »

Anyone own, or ever shot a Savage Arms O/U shotgun? I have the "skeet/trap" bug lately and Dick's has this model for $500.

They/Dick's also have the Stoeger/Benilli STF-3000 for $400 (w/$50 mail-in rebate); unfortunately, I have heard some mixed (very mixed) reviews on that shotgun - to make matters worse, there was even talk on a forum about delays (upwards of 4mos) in getting the manufacture's rebate.

The Savage Gold Wing seems like a nice shooter - about as much as one can get a feel from inside a store handling the shotgun. This is definitely an "entry-level" shotgun that will be for skeet/trap (possibly hunting a little further downstream).

Any intel/information is welcomed....

I have a Savage rifle, and love it. However, speak of the shotguns, I can not. I can tell you that an ex Navy Officer bought one at Dick's last time I was there because one of his buds had one and this Navy Officer HAD to have one as soon as he got stateside.

If they make their shotguns as good as their rifles then it's a winner

Whoa now there young fella - I'll leave the "break-dancing" to you youngsters; at my age "break-dancing" has a totally different meaning - should I attempt. Actually my dancing even to slower music is more like "...snap, crackle and pop" and I ain't talking about the cereal either...

Anyone on here have preference to traget loads for skeet/trap...? I stopped by Walmart and got 100/box of Winchester, Federal and Remington (300/shells total for $60) - spec's generally = 12g/3-dram/1oz or 1-1/8ox, and 7.5/8-shot; muzzle-velocities tended to be uniform (+/- 1200 fps).

... ran 125/shells through the Savage Arms O/U 12g; not one issue. Out of 25/round, scored consistently (and frustrating) 18/18/19/20/18; no fault of the shotgun, readily admit "user-errors." Low recoil - weight distributed well (there's no inertia component on this unit); seemed (user opinion) to shoot better with the Federal "Multi-purpose" shells than the Winchester and Remingtons. Shotgun come with five-chokes, going to alternate chokes tonight and possibly hit the range again - to see if any impacts up/down on scores.

... for the price ($500) the Savage Stevens 512 O/U in 12g is a good shotgun for trap/skeet (jury is still out on hunting).
