Interesting clock

Post by Reverenddel »

As you know, going through people's things when they pass is interesting.

So I have an antique French brass clock with a mercury pendulum. Started doing some precursory research on them. :bangin:

Holy mackeral! Between the EPA losing it's mind, the antique people trying to "throw shade" on them to get them, and me looking at e-bay thinking "Maybe I can get the Sig I want this year." Dang!

It's thankfully insane that the internet keeps people from ripping off other people in this day, and age, if you are WILLING to research.

I had one dealer say "I'll give you $200. That's a fair price." I'm looking at the same clock on E-bay in WORSE shape going for $1500. Uh-huh... Thief.

I would also like to see a picture too . I bought a mantle clock a few years ago at an estate sale for $45 . I knew it was pretty old when I first saw it and was surprised at getting it so cheap . A friend of mine knew a guy that was into old German and European clocks . Took it to him and by the expression on his face when he first saw it said it all ! He pointed out a few things interesting and then offered me $450 . He said it was made in the early 1700's and all of the internal parts were made of Apple wood .The he started telling me it isn't everyday someone gets 10 times return on an investment . I told him I wanted to think about it and would let him know . A year later I put it on eBay and started the bid at $50 with a $1500 reserve . In less than 2 Hrs. it was bid up to$2,300 . Since I stated at the beginning I reserved the right to end the auction at anytime I accepted the $2,300 bid through PayPal and was done. Good luck with the clock and watch out for dealers !!!

I opened this thread expecting to see a briefcase model digital clock.

The watch that I am currently wearing, I bought for $15 from a shady character who approached me in a parking lot and said, "Hey, wanna buy a watch?". I looked it up online, and discovered that it was worth about $75.

One of the reasons I love the interwebs so much; you can research most anything, and determine an approximate value.

If I could justify thousands of dollars for a clock, I'd make an offer on a clock that irritates the EPA.

It is worth remembering. Anyone who is buying something from you, in order to sell to someone else, is not there for your benefit. And while they have someone's best interest in mind, it isn't yours.

Interesting clock, BTW. Never heard of mercury pendulums, but compensating for temperature... that's pretty cool.!
My grandfather said, "Always use your head!".
I told him, "I want to pound nails!"
He said, "Best use a hammer instead."
