Not even close to the same recoil energy... the difference is one is in a 22-30lb package with a highly efficient muzzle break. The other is a 10lb package with a somewhat good break.
The hand loading is 1/2 to 1/3 the cost for the 338, and you can do it on non-specialty equipment.
My goal is to be able to hit a deer size target, able to get a soft target kill, at greater than 1000 yards.

at 1000... a 12" vital zone... net-net that means moa, first shot, every time. near perfect wind dope, near perfect range read. Plus you are dealing with non-static targets, and a 1.3+ second flight time. 1 good step from the deer, and you'd miss the whole animal. If you could come up with that level of marksmanship repeatably you would be a national level competitive shooter and be winning events regularly.
