...and I had an idea for a pretty blood-curdling SHTF novel.

Imagine a world where:

the USA has totally abandoned controlling its borders, opening the way for anyone to bring anything they want into this country,

where many large cities refuse to even apprehend and turn over to federal authorities known criminal aliens; much less mere illegal ones,

but that doesn’t matter because the feds won’t take meaningful action against them anyway,

and numerous Muslim enclaves have sprung up all over the country; at least some of which provide their occupants with guerilla warfare training,

and ISIS/ISIL has begun a campaign of worldwide terror attacks with mass shootings and bombings at large public gatherings,

and the USA then admits scores of thousands of unvetted (and unvettable) “Syrian refugees” into the country,

and many public venues have established huge “gun-free zones where large numbers of people gather and are confined and utterly defenseless,

and then the totally inevitable and foreseeable happens and the terrorist mass murders, sometime between now and just before the 2016 national elections, begin in the USA:

AND SO, confronted with a true national crisis, the POTUS deems himself obliged to impose martial law, forbid travel except by permit, seize assets including firearms and food stockpiles, and of course forbid public assemblies; which would naturally and most unfortunately necessitate the indefinite postponement of elections.

From there, the literary possibilities are endless. It would take a really good professional wordsmith to fully exploit them. Only problem I see with that plot is that such a long string of coincidences involving idiotic decisions and actions defies credulity. The critics would be sure to say it was just too contrived.

I am willing to guess that there is more than a 50% chance that a rebellion / revolution would start litterally seconds after the broadcast concludes. And I think there would be at least 8 to 10 million private citizens that kick it off.

The only scary part is, they would be taking rifles to a drone fight. And last time I checked, attack choppers, high-flying planes and drones can fire bullets and missiles from so far away, you won't see, hear or feel a thing.

The real question the becomes, will the nations of the world interfere with an American domestic conflict or let millions become slaves or killed.

Seems like a great time for another country to come in, then take over. Before too long, we'd all be wearing blue berets because the UN will be the world wide governing body.

I actually know Baldacci and his sister (I think) lives not far from where my family is. Pretty nice guy actually. Very nice side of the family that I know also.
