And snow it begins...

Post by SHMIV »

I noticed snow caps on a lot of western mountains, a few days back. A couple days later, I noted a few blue splotches on the north western corner of my weather map. Yesterday, I ran into a guy that works for the same company that I do, out in Kansas, on I-70. He dropped down from 80 to avoid heavy snow in Wyoming. A couple hours later, TBH ended up dropping from 70 to 40 to avoid the snow in Vail, Colorado. Then, this morning, just west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, I hit a snow storm.

The wretched winter sneezin' has begun. Blah.

A few more days, I'll head towards home. I will fix a tropical beverage with rum, and drink to the rapid return of hot summer days.

No intention of bringing that stuff home, lol. But, it was moving in an eastern direction.

I worked outside all day...Very warm and humid for November. Even though I hate snow I am ready for a little cooler weather!

Know those areas well. Used to live in Utah. I would travel between UT & VA multiple times a year. 80 through Wyoming is a beeotch damn near any time of year. Always windy it seems. Put a little of the white stuff on it....damn. Been through Vail in the winter too...yikes. That place is horrible in snow season. I did some work there about 13yrs ago in the winter. wow. It just snowed, & snowed, & snowed. Thought I'd never get out of there...!

When I would travel from VA out west.... I would take 64 all the way to St Louis, 70 to Denver, 25 to Cheyenne, then 80 across Wyoming into UT. At least that was my preferred route. Seemed to be the fastest route too. Probably made that trip one direction or the other 30 times.

80 in Wyoming in cooler weather; that can get dicey in a lightly loaded truck, even when there is no snow. I've had to shut down on account of the high winds around there, more times than I can count. I've seen a great many big rigs and campers on their sides, on the side of the interstate.

This time of year, I'm content to run 40 back and forth, or lower.

I talked to a driver running east on 40, yesterday. He had dropped to 40 to avoid Vail, too, and planned on running up 25 into Denver. Unfortunately, it looked like he was going to hit the worst of the hills and curves at the same time as a snow storm. I hope he made it alright.

Yeah man. 80 through Wyoming sucks in the winter. I too have seen lots of big rigs off the road, or on their sides on that stretch. It's nerve racking in a passenger truck. I couldn't imagine driving a big rig through it in those conditions.

80 on a windy day, in a big rig; very unsettling. You know something ain't right when you realize that your trailer is following behind you in the other lane, lol.

I've had to stop, then ended up talking to guys with 30+ years experience, full loads, and truck payments that weren't about to move until the wind died down. You know it's bad when the owner-operaters stop moving. Those guys can't stand to sit still for longer than 10 minutes.

When I originally posted this thread, I was on the AZ-NM line, at Speedys truck stop & hangout for derelict Navajo. Now I'm in Oklahoma at some casino.
