NASCAR Martinsville

Post by wittmeba »

Anyone follow NASCAR? It was an exciting day to say the least. Our son got tickets from his work and he invited us. Very exciting times at about lap 450+. You should have heard the crowd when Matt took out Lagano. It was obvious who is more popular.

Glad you had a good time.

I stopped following NASCAR when Earnhardt died. Got tired of picking new drivers to root for.

If they started racing shine-runners again, I might redevelop an interest.

I pulled for Tony Stewart for years but got tired of his politics and attitude (even though attitudes make better racing :) ).

In the background I pulled for Ryan Newman especially when he drove for Ford. Still think his is a great driver - just doesn't seem to have the fame and glory support of some of the others. Perhaps he is too quiet. It is all about money and lots of it. But isn't everything?

I was a Ryan Newman fan as well, mostly because his primary sponsor at the time was Alltel. But I lost interest in NASCAR back when they changed the rules so Jeff Gordon could be in the chase, even though he was in 16th place at the time. Now I'm back to following NHRA drag racing.

I like tractor pulls. Those are fun.

I used to like demolition derbys, but then I realized what a waste of perfectly good automobiles that was.

It's getting harder to find those full size cars from the 70's that will survive a derby. The last one I saw had mostly old Crown Vic cop cars, which didn't take much of a beating at all. But it was still fun to watch.

NASCAR today is a joke. When it began, the cars were truly "stock cars" - hot-rodded examples of actual production cars. You could buy a car almost like Sunday's winner on Monday. Now there is no part of the car, other than the vestigial inner rear window, that has any provenance to the car's nominal manufacturer.

Like "New Country" music, NASCAR wants you believe it has a connection to genuine Southern heritage, but it's all posturing and marketing.

Sunday 's race was the first race I missed in 20 years. After the way The Talladega race ended , I will never watch another. It's as bad as Pro Football. Too many rules and too much electronic monitoring! It hasn't been the same since Earnhardt 's death.

Sad, sad, sad.
We went to the truck race on Saturday because a friend had never been.

Boring.

Very few people there. NASCAR's heavy-handinees is evident everywhere.

I lost interest a couple years ago when they blantantly ruled against Kyle Busch every time he belched and gave a race to Jeff Gordon when the first raindrop fell.

I don't know how much longer the drivers and owners will continue to show up.

I have been a Kyle fan for years because, despite his temper he drove more like my hero Curtis Turner and the other old drivers.
Curtus once won a race because he was the last car left running on the track.

NASCAR now controls every moment of the race to where every 500 mile race finishes with most of the field finishing within feet if not inches of the winner.
They may as well write the script and pass copies out before the race

Sprint Cup racing has gotten to be exactly like All Star Wrestling! Very predictable and boring. NASCAR has become just like our Government, to big and in the way.

Quit watching the races a few years ago for many of the same reasons expressed here. These guys drive up to 200+ mph on closed loop tracks, in close quarters. NASCAR says they make these rules to keep them safe. What the hell is safe about 200+ mph in heavy traffic?

Who would have thought that the moonshiners spirit would have turned so PC? Yeah, I quit watching years ago.

gave up on it when 2/3's of the race was driving in circles, and the whole race coming down to a green white checker where some dude 10 cars back happened to be on a good gas/tire rotation vs the leaders and won it because the top10 had to pit.

hell in that case just have everyone pull a random number from a hat and award finishing place on that.... at least that would have seemed more fair.

I guessing you mean Erica Enders? I've never seen her box (stop laughing) but she must be doing something right to lock up a championship before the season is over.

It's been nice to see so many fast girls this year. Erica, Courtney, Brittany, Leah, Alexis. I hear that Ashely Force is coming back next year too. Unlike Danica Patrick in NASCAR, these girls can actually drive.

Last tractor pull that I attended had a class for big rigs. This 15 year old girl in a mid-70's International damn near won. She would have, if she hadn't blown a hose the moment she started her last run. She embarrassed a few guys, that day.

I have been a Tony Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing fan since Gibbs started his team. Since Stewart is retiring next year, I'm going with Carl Edwards.

I really don't know how I would go about picking a new driver. When I was about 6, I liked the guy who drove the McDonald's car. That probably had something to do with association; I associated McDonald's with my grandparents, which was associated with fun. Then I was a Richard Petty fan; probably on account of his hat. But, he retired. Then I was an Earnhardt fan as a teenager, but that was because all of my friends were Earnhardt fans, and being a fan of anyone else in their presence was bad for your health (they were some die-hard #3 fans!) That carried through to my 20's until Earnhardt died.

Now, I don't know what I'd base a fanship on. It's not like I know any drivers. Well, I do know some Sadlers, who are distant kin to the racing Sadlers. But, I don't rightly care much for them.

I could get into something local, I suppose. Local events are more fun, anyway. At the very least, the beer is affordable.
