I am amused that the table in the article included a section for "Happened In Florida".

Considering the large number of guns, gun owners, and dogs in this country, I figure that an annual average of 1.2 accidental shootings by dogs isn't bad.

The article does have good cautionary tales, though. One would do well to take heed to the warning, lest one finds oneself as part of that 1.2.

Any dumbass who'd lay a firearm down with the safety off under almost any circumstances I can think of is dangerously stupid.

Poor ole dogs probably just shot them in self-defense before the dumbasses accidentally shot their dog.

Most cats are too smart to get caught. Cats don't get blamed since their owners die under "mysterious circumstances" with no clues pointing to the cat.


As far as dog and guns are concerned... a right-handed gun with a cross bolt safety would likely be laid down with the ejection port and safety up. Any dog dancing about, treading on the gun enough to trigger it, could easily step the safety to "fire". Not sure these people even had to leave their guns laying about with safety off...
