IT'S WAR!

Post by Reverenddel »

So this evening, I decided to take the scrap lumber I had laying around, and a tarp, and build the boy-child a "fort -thingy" for him to enjoy. It's a cool evening, and he's been bored with all the rain as of late, so I figured this would occupy him, and keep him outta the rain if he wanted to go outside. There were limbs laying on the patio stone from those storms, so I told the boy-child to take the smaller pieces of scrap lumber to the corner of the yard. I went to throw the limbs, and branches into the gully behind the yard.

As I was walking back from the gully... the ground went soft, I looked down, and said "Huh, is that a mole ho...SH"T!!!!"

Yellowjacket nest, in ground, in the MIDDLE of the YARD!

You'd think I'm too fat to run, but I made the Olympic time trials for the 50 meter dash... with the boy child coming at me going "WHAT'S WRONG!?"

I yelled "YELLOW JACKET NEST!"

He went "CRAP!" And ran WITH ME! We get far enough away to look back... Dear...Gawd. Like a WWII Japanese underground bunker! Angry little yellowbastages EVERYWHERE! At least 100! So we gather the toolbox, and go back inside.

Looking out the backdoor window. It's AWFUL! I mean just freakin' UNBELIEVABLE! The foot print went at least two inches down, and there were still 100's flying around 10 minutes later. To see if they were "aggressive/protector" mode, I chuck a piece of rotten wood by the hole.

It was like a Coyote/Roadrunner cartoon... The Yellow Jackets went UP... hovered for a split second... the went after that wood like it had spit on their queen!

I have a plan, and the tools....Thursday night? It's WAR!

In the past, I just poured a little bit of gas down the hole. Next day, they're gone, or dead, I don't care which. And they don't come back to use that hole either.

The EPA will come in and say you can do no such thing as this is now their federal government-protected natural habitat.

Yeah, forget the match. It burns off all the fumes. The fumes is what makes sure you get all of 'em.

If you've never dug up a ground bee nest, you should. It looks just like any other bee/hornet nest hanging from a tree, it's just buried. The gas will soak the nest, kill the workers, eggs, queen, etc.

I can testify on all points. Mowing for a vacationer, I saw what I thought was the remains of last years hornets nest (did you know that Honets are Yellowjackets?). Come to find out, a skunk must have dug up this year's nest. I won't bore you with the details, but they do not like string trimmers.
Sevin works also, but gasoline is more commonly at hand.

If you have any old screen, old screen door or window screen (best if in a frame) throw it over the hole. Then you can approach carefully and apply Raid spray killers as needed. We had lots of experience in SW County Roanoke.

Years ago I was doing a service call at a tire plant, I think in Tennessee.
One morning that week the tech I was working with came in shaking his head and smiling.
Asked what was amusing he said that one of the "good old boys" in his carpool was found that morning staking out his lawnmower with bungee cords and a rope to keep the emergency cut off engaged. Just before getting into the car he started the engine and then they left for the plant.
The guys in the car asked him what the hell was he doing.
He replied, "Underground wasp nest."

The next morning the tech came to me seriously amazed.
It seems when the carpool dropped off the man with the staked lawnmower that evening everyone got out to see what had happened.
The lawnmower obviously was stopped because of being out of gas.
The bungees were removed and the mower moved.
What was revealed was a huge pile of wasp pieces.
As they emerged from the ground the mower shredded them.

I think maybe we ought to call bullchit on this one. "huge pile of wasp pieces"? The wasp pieces would surely have been blown away by the "prop wash" from the mower blade, wouldn't they?

I'm going with the entertainment value. Though, not a bad idea in principal.

Did I ever tell you guys about the time I had to vacuum hundreds of bees out of a tree with my shop vac?

Good point. I miss-remembered. The tech DID say the lawn was covered in black and yellow bug pieces.
