Re: AK vs AR
Ah! the same old debate. I have had several of the weapons mentioned. The Ak and the SKS I still have. I have giver my oldest son my M1A1 National Match and do in fact miss it. My line up would be the M1A1 for long distance then the SKS for in closer and last the AK47 for real close work. All 3 will take a beating and keep on running. I don't need a AR-10 as the SKS and the AK 47 are both .308 If I need to realy reach out and touch someone I will with my Remington 700 in 7 MM magnum.

Re: AK vs AR
Your AK is chambered in 308? How much kick does that thing produce? What kind of modifications or what kind of AK is it to be in 308? You have me interested as I have not seen a 308 AK yet.SgtBill wrote:Ah! the same old debate. I have had several of the weapons mentioned. The Ak and the SKS I still have. Re: AK vs AR
All AK's and AK 47's are .308 as in bore size. 7.62X39 for an AK and 7.62X51 for a .308 or M1A1
7.62 denotes the bullet diameter or .308
X39 is the length of the cartridge I.E. .308 short cartridge
X51 is the length of the cartridge I.E. .308 long cartridge

The best thing about an AK is , in my opinion, if need be, you can shoot mud out of it.

Re: AK vs AR
But at least it will still shoot. Drop an AR in the dirt, much less mud and it needs cleaning. Some of the newer ones are better, but IMO the AK is far more reliable and will probably stay that way for a while.GS78 wrote:The best thing about an AK is , in my opinion, if need be, you can shoot mud out of it.
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

Re: AK vs AR
unless you buy a saiga sgt bill which is an Ak but they come in plenty of different chambers. I have one in .308 they make em in .223, 7.62x39 ,.30-06,5.45x39, even in 12ga! and i can tell you a friend has a saiga 12. A 12 ga with an Ak action is one terribly devastating weapon.

Re: AK vs AR
Sorry Yugrintin but the Saiga only has a Kalashnikov TYPE action not a action of a full AK. I do not think it can be called an AK, but if that is what you wish have at it.

Re: AK vs AR
when you say full Ak what do you mean? Saigas are made the factory where Kalashnikov still works. almost every part is interchangeable between an AK and saiga 7.62x39 except for the bolt(3 lug) i believe.
Re: AK vs AR
This is too funny

Now is the time for all good men to get off their rusty dustys...

Re: AK vs AR
never claimed to know more just know Kalashnikov still works at the izhmash factory so i think even though you have to unconvert them saigas are about as ak as you get aside from full auto of course
Re: AK vs AR
that being said both weapons have positives and negatives both are great depending on what you're looking for why not own both like i said i already have the saiga .308 next purchase is a mosin pickin it up this weekend after that im getting an AR now that prices are somewhat reasonable again

Re: AK vs AR
I have used a 7 MM Mag. for over 40 years. I stoped shooting it about 10 years ago because of shoulder problems. It is like the 300 win. or Weatherby Mag it can kill on both ends.

Re: AK vs AR
Bill you are so correct, I had mine down loaded to about 30-06 and it still hurt you! I like my 270 better and the more I shoot my LR308 I like it even better. It is day by day moving into 1st place at my house. (1911A1 in currently #1)SgtBill wrote:I have used a 7 MM Mag. for over 40 years. Re: AK vs AR
It really depends on what you like most really. The whole AK vs AR one being better then the other, to me anyways, is pretty old. If this was the case, what about the F2000 vs AR, P90 vs AK? All sub machine gun / assault style weapons have their advantages and disadvantages. Firstly, everyone and their brother makes an AR, Bushmaster, Colt, DPMS, Del-Ton, etc. Very few make AKs and if they do, they require the 5 U.S. compliance standards as any other imported firearm, therefore, to me, the firearm just isn't original, of course it will still operate as normal. It's all about balance and feel in my opinion. Do you feel more comfortable handling an AK or an AR? You have access to various amounts of parts for both firearms when it comes to the AK and/or AR. Also, AKs stand as a single style weapon, unless of course you run into a RPK which is nothing more then a longer barrel version of the weapon, the AR has various styles to choose from. Too me, both weapons stand strong, they both have ups and they both have downs, but again what weapon doesn't?

Re: AK vs AR
yeah, that was my point, get a bushmaster a little dirty, and you fight to fire it...drop an AK in the mud, pick it up, point and shoot.zephyp wrote:But at least it will still shoot.
