I think I have a problem...

Post by MarcSpaz »

.
Is it bad if I wanted to go to the range today, but didn't, because I "only have" 660 rounds of 5.56 NATO left and I feel like I need another case before its okay to go?

To make things worse, that made me do a quick ammo count. I almost had a panic attack when I realized I only have 110 round of 300BO and 240 rounds of 7.62, 300 round of .40 and 400 rounds of 9mm.

Seriously though... do you guys ever feel like if you only have a couple hundred rounds of some specific weapons ammo, will you not use that weapon until you get to a comfortable level?

I like to joke around (like above) but I wonder if my behavior is odd. The last 2 ammo and weapons ban threats, I was flush with toys and ammunition, walking around thinking "look at these suckers.". But, I didn't really use any ammo til things were back to normal. I started feeling like, what if I'm wrong about looting not happening in rural or the burbs? I don't want to have something go down and I have nothing. You know?

I always keep a close count on all my Ammo . I just think it's good to know what you have and how much. I've been shooting my SKS a lot lately. A couple buddies also have SKS's and AK's. We have been shooting almost every weekend. I've shot 2K rounds myself this Spring. I do keep several thousand on hand just in case. I don't mind shooting Ammo that can easily be replaced. When Carol shoots with me we usually shoot mostly .22LR and can go through a thousand rounds pretty quickly. My problem is I buy up Ammo that I don't shoot knowing that I may need it someday. I must have 6K rounds of 9mm and 3K rounds of .308 and at least 2K rounds of 30.30....I'll have them when I need them. :pistol:

I'm like Snakester. I have about 7k rounds of 9mm, with 1k more scheduled for delivery next week, and a couple thousand rounds of 223. I'll shoot those when I feel like it but am good about restocking.

The one caliber I haven't been shooting lately is 22lr. That ammo is hard to find. I have a couple thousand rounds of ammo, but don't like shooting it because I know it will be hard to restock.

During the last ammo shortage, I was shooting a lot of sporting clays. I could always find 12 gauge ammo.

Good to have at least 1k rounds per gun hand. The more you think you'll need a particular gun if SHTF, the more you'll want to up that count.

Man, I'm glad I'm not alone on this. I was starting to worry. My big concern is ammo for my M4. Its light, good for CQB to 600m, and if I'm in a situation where I can only pick one rifle to use in a crisis... That one is it.

I can't seem to stockpile any 5.56 or .223 ammunition because every time I get some, I end up at the range all day. The only thing I don't run through that rifle is some ammo a buddy of mine got for me. Some 855.

I can't shoot the green-tips at the primary range I go to. Plus, they feel more like a gift than an ammo supply. Then I think they are not great for defense rounds, but I may need to shoot through something hard to get to a target... So I'm not shooting those at all.

I'm the same way. I have about 1500 rnds of 9 then went to the range and immediately ordered another 500 to replenish my stock. I haven't had the time yet to stock up on 45 but have slowly started buying the 100 rnd boxes when Walmart has them on sale, need to place an online order for some soon.

I don't have anywhere near that much .. (or maybe I do) I do need to pick up some more 5.56. What do you guys store your ammo in? I like to keep mine locked and away from the kids so I have a simple stack on lock box for ammo. Any other ideas?

Keeping a large store of ammo seems pretty logical to me. I assume that most of us here have a practical reason to own guns; obviously, we have fun shooting them, but they have value in emergencies, too.

In case of emergency, guns are no where near as useful as they could be if you don't have any ammunition for them.

Like I always say; an unloaded gun is just an expensive club.

I've got my do not shoot unless you need it stash, the rest is plink and practice stocks. In an effort to not need a semi to bug out, I've been reducing the cartridges in the oh-crap pile, and divesting myself of things that I can't keep a reasonable logistics supply of, because if you can't feed it and practice with it.... its a club.

At this point the go-to guns ammo stock is down to 22/9mm/5.56/7.62x51. Minus 22, aligns with nato... not an accident.

There is a special place in my heart for the MP5/10mm. Best CQB to 150m tool I can think of. So while not officially in the big logistics pile, or grab guns, if there is extra time that's #1 on the extra stuff list.

You guys are pretty much nailing my feelings to a tee. I feel the same way about NATO weapons and ammo being the best bet.

Here's another idea to keep them away from kids...

http://www.lockers.com/mobile/shop-by-d ... y-24-deep/

Easy to organize and get to the ammo you want/need, without it being very conspicuous. A simple padlock keeps the youngin' out.

I don't have kids so I just store ammo Tidy Cat litter containers after it has been cleaned and aired out. Designed to keep moisture out and has a heavy duty handle designed for weight. Doesn't scream "tactical" or "valuable ammo stored here". Makes sense to me.

No problem... At 300 lbs per shelf, it's convenient to organize and have room to put stuff away without having to dig to see what ammo you have!

The only problem I see with hiding in plain sight is... tidy cat buckets do start to look obvious when you have 9 of them stacked 2x and 6 feet tall. Just sayin'. LOL

not when you stack them near cat boxes.

Make the lie believable, and have a few bucks on top with litter in them, and no one looks any deeper.
