Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia

There are several "Firearm Unfriendly" businesses within the Commonwealth of Virginia. These businesses have posted "No Guns" signs on their properties. Please consider this when doing business with any of these establishments.

You can find a very comprehensive list of "VCDL - Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia" at the Virginia Citizens' Defense League website.

Here's the beginnings of a list, as reported by our members. I'll be maintaining/updating this list as I get the information.

Would like to see a list of unfriendly businesses compiled here. If you know of a business that frowns upon gun owners, please add it here. There are some businesses out there that have policies against firearms on their property but they do not post signs indicating such.

If you are asked to leave a privately owned property due to your carrying of a firearm, your best course of action is to vacate the premises as requested or you could be charged with trespassing.

There's a list at VCDL - it's actually linked in the first post here... but I have heard that it's not being kept totally up to date. Not that I would expect them to put businesses in there based on a one-time problem...I just want to offer a spot (this post) for people to stop by and say "Hey, I was open carrying at Food Lion the other day and the manager told me to leave". Maybe Food Lion isn't gun unfriendly, but that manager sure is!

Suntrust does not post NO GUNS but I was carrying in the small of my back and the Manager states that unless I was an Armed Currier or a Police Officer, Firearms are not aloud. I spoke with their director of safety in Richmond and he informed me that that was the policy of Suntrust.

gilbert's small arms range in lorton has a thing written on the whiteboard when you walk in, to the right of the door, saying no loaded firearms. i've seen people open carrying, but its always with the slide locked back.

If for some strange reason you ever find yourself at Manassas Mall, they have a sign posted somewhere that says no guns. Its only near one entrance and it kinda hard to notice. I think its the same deal with Potomic Mills in Woodbridge.

Sounds like a company policy to me. But if its not posted, its as if there is no policy unless somebody at the bank informs you.

School policy doesn't dictate the law, it dictates what students can and cannot do on campus. Essentially, it sets rules and consequences up to expulsion if the rules are broken. I found a press release on another forum about this. Apparently, a group of students came together to work toward the repeal of the gun ban on GMU regardless if you hold a permit or not. I thought this particular paragraph was interesting, but I'll add the link at the bottom for everyone to read:

George Mason University, located in Fairfax, Virginia, is the largest school
in Virginia with close to 30,000 students. Current policy at GMU prevents students that hold concealed handgun permits from bringing a handgun onto campus. These students are at least 21 years of age, and many are military or law enforcement veterans. Individuals who are not affiliated with the university, according to state law, are not prohibited from carrying firearms for their protection.

So I guess this means that I can walk on campus with my weapon, but I can't enter the Patriot Center with it.

I wonder if the General Assembly will craft a law that says something to the effect of:

"Any business that sells or provides a service to the general public shall not pass policies
which infringe on the rights granted by the state."


Something like this would mean that if a business who sells groceries or a venue who sells
concert tickets to the general public (meaning its customers are not members or part of a
private club) that laws passed by the state (ie: CHP laws) shall not be infringed. But if a
private golf club who's customers are members and its services are not available to the
general public would have the option to draft policies banning guns.

And given the sample wording that I used, not having the word guns or firearms listed
wouldn't likely raise the dander of the socialists filing the general assembly.
