open carry
I went to town yesterday open carrying. I had a lady ask me if I was going to shoot someone. I told her it was like insurance I buy. I hope I never have to us it. She just did not under stand it. She told me we don't live in the wild west get over it. I tried to explain to her that open carry and concealed carry help reduce the crime rate.. but I should have saved my breath. any ideas on how I could explain it better the next time?

Re: open carry
I have never had a positive conversation with anyone who came at me like that. I have never talked to an anti, gave them real stats and information and gotten anything in return but more hostility.
I have an uncle who absolutely hates guns, but wanted to know what it was like to shoot one. I took him to the range, thinking he was going to be hooked. He had a great time the whole time, but still swears he will never buy one, constantly tells me I should get rid of mine because I don't need them, and regularly talks about how all firearms should be outlawed.
Its like they live in a parallel universes where its always "Opposite Day".

Out of deference to the gentleladies who read this board, I won't post the answer that lady deserved to get. And so as not to put gun people in a bad light I wouldn't have told HER what she so badly needed to hear. But I'll swear I'm about to bust wide open for want of saying it.......

Your response: "Yes, quite possibly. Stand still right there for a moment?"graybeard321 wrote: I had a lady ask me if I was going to shoot someone.
Yeah, I know. Honestly you will never win against people like that.
Best you can do is be sickingly nice and just move on.

I know that last comment was a joke, but please DO NOT even jokingly suggest to someone you are going to shoot someone. I spent a lot of time doing damage control when one of my employees made such a comment to another employee.

I had someone ask who I was lookin to shoot, once. He wasn't hostile about it, though. It was more of a "tongue in cheek" comment that was intended to foster conversation.

Re: open carry
I was thinking more in terms of indicating the lady's chest and asking her if she was fixin' to nurse somebody; thereby making the point that just because you have something handy doesn't mean you're hell-bent on using it. But I'd never do that because just as somebody already said, I'd brand all gun owners as crass, crude misogonysts.

Re: open carry
Just to clear things up... all joking aside... she didn't ask who, when, or for what reasons. If someone is to ask me if I am going to shoot someone, the answer Gary gave is the correct response. Why the hell would I carry a gun if I was not willing to shoot someone? And if you hang around me long enough, you may just see it happen. Seems like a reasonable response to me.flyingron wrote:I know that last comment was a joke, but please DO NOT even jokingly suggest to someone you are going to shoot someone. Of course, we could get into conflict avoidance and alternate resolution, but means of non-lethal solutions were obviously not part of the convo.

Her question did not deserve an answer, because it was a stupid question.
My response to her, "That's a stupid question. Have a nice day."

I would of explained to her that I could pull it and kill her and there wouldn't be a thing that could stop me because we don't live in that kind of world! It may as well be the wild west!

Re: open carry
Dunno what I would have said, usually I'm stunned that anyone speaks to me. I just float in, and out of places now. Trying to observe things, and make no wake.
However, if questioned. I would simply say "Ma'am. I've seen things that would make you crap yourself. You need to arm yourself! Quick! Go! (shooing hand motion)"
