Gun Free Zones: A Mother's Opinion

Post by OakRidgeStars »

Where do you stand on the argument of gun free zones in schools, malls, airports, or movie theaters these days? Do you stand on the side of more guns equals more violence and more victims, or do you land on the side of gun supporters and believe more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens will lead to fewer victims? Or are you unsure where you land on the topic?

If you’re unsure, let me ask you this … If there was a law-abiding citizen ready and willing to defend the Sandy Hook Campus with a firearm on that tragic day in December of 2012 and meet Adam Lanza with the same deadly firepower that he had, isn’t it possible he might not have taken so many innocent lives? Or possibly even picked a different target knowing it was likely he would face someone defending the school with a firearm?

I have to believe that, placed in the position of defending children in their charge, even the staunchest anti-gunner would prefer a firearm to shielding with their body...and it would be more effective.

My cousin, who is both a mother and a public school teacher, has stated to me that she would sooner die that have her students witness her "murder " an armed intruder at her school. Apparently, she's also willing to let her students die, too. Anything to not be a "murderer ".

She is also against allowing anyone else the option of arming themselves.

I don't get it.

Murder is a crime of violence. Homicide for the purpose of defending innocent lives is not a bad thing. It is unfortunate that a good person needs to take a life, but needed.

What I find absolutely astonishing is, people who say that only the police should have a gun and the police will protect and/or save them. They say "we need to get quicker police response times". So, its a bad idea to have a good guy with a gun, there and ready to protect the moment something happens, but a great idea for a good guy with a gun to show up ten minutes after people start dying to end the situation and clean-up the bodies? How does that make sense?

There will always be people that live in their own little make believe world, where bad things only happen to bad people. I wouldn't be surprised if there were people that felt that way at Columbine and Sandy Hook. Of course, that was before the shooting began.

With my cousin, I think that it has to do with her conscience. Her thinking, of course, is seriously flawed. She hasn't thought it through. I tried to help her with that, but she just kept repeating "I won't be a murderer! I won't be a murderer!" All I could do was shake head.

No, she won't be a murderer. She'll just be a victim.

Yes. Yes she will. Which is a shame, but what do you do?
