Sierra Sid's/TA- Gun Collection

I just grabbed some coffee at an interesting spot. It's a TA truck stop with an adjoining casino, Sierra Sid's, in Sparks NV.

Truck stop/casinos are fairly common, in the west. Most of the places where I stop have, at least, a few slot machines. (Slot machines are little more than video games, these days. No more one armed bandits. That disappoints me. )

Sierra Sid's has a firearm display, though. Mostly commemorative "cowboy guns" from the 60's and 70's. Apparently, they possess some Elvis guns, too, but I missed those. I was unaware of them, when I went inside, and I don't care to wander around casinos, too much. Also, they have a John Wayne commemorative 1911.

Sounds like my kinda spot. I used to have a gambling problem, so the casino isn't much of an attraction, but I love memorabilia.

Gambling never appealed to me much. When I was about 11 or 12, my parents would pay me to babysit my snivelings. There was a particular lottery scratch off that caught my eye, so my mother agreed to bring me a lottery ticket after work, each night. That lasted for 3 nights. All 3 tickets proved to be a dollar wasted, and I concluded that gambling, in all of it's forms, was silly.

The only exception to that was that I have always wanted play a real slot machine, just for the novelty. Less than a dollars worth of nickels, and I would be bored with it, but it would have been fun for a minute. I can't bring myself to touch the abominations that have replaced slot machines.

The real slots would give your arm a workout. I had my fun in Vegas in '81. Played a lot of the nickel machines. They'd take your money then spit out a bunch back at ya. Had a lot of fun with one roll of nickels.

Seems to me like back in the '70s the guy that used to own White's Truck Stop at exit 205 on I-81 had a big display of guns and knives there. Anybody else remember that?

..... and I concluded that gambling, in all of it's forms, was silly.

My game is Roulette. Whenever we take a cruise, I spend a fair amount of time in the casino. I pick an amount of money that I am willing to spend, and I play that. About 75% of the time, I walk away with house money, or at least break even. Its entertainment for me, just like someone else buying a movie ticket. When the movie is over, you have nothing tangible to show for it, aside from the memory of seeing the movie. When I'm done gambling, I may walk out with cash.

I'm back at Sierra Sid's. I have time to walk around, today. I found the Elvis display, which is cool. It's a small display, and has some of Vernon Presleys possessions, too.

Also notable: above the bar is a Noisy Cricket, the "Flashy Thingy", and one of the other alien guns from that movie. According to the bartender, I was one of very few people to know what they were.

Random: earlier today, I passed by a strip mall that housed an MMA training facility, a "tactical shop ", and a military surplus store.
