Local turkey calls

Post by wscrst »

Hello. I have been getting into turkey hunting. I would really like to have a hand made, Virginia made call. I like the idea of a call that is not mass produced. Plus it would support a local artisan. It doesn't have to be perfect heirloom quality, just a functional call made locally. Does anyone on the forum do this or know someone who does? Thanks.

Are you talking this style, or something else?

Thank you both. I am open to any type of call, but I would prefer that it be made as locally as possible. Gun shows it is.

I have made them in the past but nothing recently. Are you looking for the box call or the pad?

I guess I would favor a box call, but I am mostly just looking for something interesting and unique. I'd explore all options.

Where are you located and would you be willing to learn to make it yourself? If you make it then it would be unique to you. If you live close and want to come by I can help you make it as I have all the tools and a lot of wood, but that is up to you. It takes about an afternoon to make one. They are not hard and you really only need the basic of tools to make one.
Here is a video that I watched when I was learning to make mine. This guy is great and really makes a nice box call in the video.

I live in Woodbridge so you are a fair piece from here but if you want to make the trek for a trukey box call the offer still stands.

That looks like a pretty cool little woodworking project. No high-end skills required and very modest wood requirements. Feller with Band saw, the right diameter forstner bit and a hollow chisel mortiser could really streamline the process, I'd reckon. 'Bout all the turkey hunters hereabouts use those diaphragm calls, though. Keeps their hands free.

Vern,

With work and the kids, I will take a rain check on your offer. But, thank you for your generosity and the video. I don't even have a table saw, but if I could get the main pieces cut I could cut, chisel, and wittle away. Great fun. I might have to send that video to my father in law who is always looking for an excuse to head to the shop (and his is fully stocked and operational).

dorminWS, I hear you about mouth calls. I am working on my skills in that arena as well. I don't know what I am doing, but I feel very comfortable with some yelps and then clucks to start out the day. I am just trying to use everything.

Great stuff all. I am new to this forum and could not feel more welcome.

After viewing more videos and reading some box call plans, I am very excited to try to make a call myself. Thanks for the encouragement.

That is what we like to hear and I can't wait to see the photos.
Oh don't get to upset if your first box call don't come out exactly perfect that is what makes them unique. The true test is not that the call looks fancy, but whether the box calls a turkey in or not and you get a shot.
