Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
Down here where I'm at, it takes about the same amount of time to get to either place... about 20 minutes. You pretty much have to drive by my house to get there. Yea... hard to beat it when its that close compared to driving 40 minutes each way.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I'm a fan of Sharpshooters, I'll admit it. Considering it's not the best range out there, it fits my needs, it is modest in price, and is a quick trip (most of the time). The employees are all usually friendly, and I often see them making an attempt at helping out those new to shooting, which is refreshing.
- I'm right at that distance as well...a turn on to Rolling, a few lights, and I'm at Terminal Rd.
Although, I know the exact feeling; the brass litters the floor, and it can get rather irritating. On top of that, I've only seen one account of an employee sweeping lanes, due to the patrons who refuse to do so.trailrunner wrote:I used to sweep all my brass into the bucket when I was done, but now it's so darn crowded I just push it forward, and I note that I'm about the only one who bothers to clean up after themselves anymore.
You must live next door to metrailrunner wrote:Having said all that, they are four miles and four stoplights from my house.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
Man, I just re-upped at Silver Eagle Group. A couple of folks that I know - people who had never shot a gun until I took them to a range! - just became members at Elite. I live in Ashburn, so SEG is closer... but man, the reports are tempting.
Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I visited Elite today to break in my SP2022 9mm. This was my second visit. The first time I visited, most of the lanes were open (6 December @ 4:30PM). When I visited today, around 3:30PM, it was very crowded...there were not so many open slots. I'd apply for membership if I weren't planning on moving to the west coast soon...the place is just that awesome! It doesn't hurt that I'm like 10 minutes from Elite, either...

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I just got a membership a 2 weeks ago. I have been 5 times already. Only had to wait for the hundred yard once... and it was less than 10 minutes. And the wait was only because I needed 2 lanes. They were just waiting for a second lane to free up next to one that was already empty or I could have gone straight back.
Going to do some pistol work Monday before physical therapy.
I like it a lot.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
Went to ESS again tonight. Man, can't say enough about it. If anyone wants to try it out and you make your way over... let me know. I'll head over with you.
I was on the 25 yard today. Setup the programmable target presentation. Spent an hour and a half practicing drawing from my retention holster and firing 2C1H drills. First pull on the double action with rapid followup and the head shot on the single action. Programmed the timer for 2 seconds of presentation. Damn does 2 seconds go by fast when you need to respond, draw, and fire.
I ran the drill so many times that when I unholstered to get undressed tonight, I almost popped one off by reflex. LOL It was hard not to.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I've heard chirping among a few of my friends about the "one gun out at a time" rule. Some people find it really annoying. I do not.
I suspect the rule is in place so that range officers can check lanes quickly and effectively for the safe handling of firearms. I appreciate any place that puts an emphasis on gun safety, nothing gets me more pissed than careless people on a gun range.

Ha, sounds like a good time. I still have not been, have had some family stuff to deal with. Anyway, I have an unfired Armalite AR and an unfired Savage .308 I need to sight in. Also need to get some trigger time with my 2 carry pieces.MarcSpaz wrote:Went to ESS again tonight. Man, can't say enough about it. I thought someone had mentioned they rent pistols as well? I want to try out the shield and need to find something for my wife to play with.
Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I don't believe they have firearm rentals available yet, but they are planning on it.Vince wrote:I thought someone had mentioned they rent pistols as well? I want to try out the shield and need to find something for my wife to play with.

They won't be able to do rentals until the permitting is approved by the County for the hazardous waste disposal and they get an Armorer on staff, which are both required for cleaning and maintenance.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I just got out to Elite Shooting Sports range in Gainsville VA .. it was great.
Probably the best indoor range I have used. The parking lot was pretty full, but still no wait for the 25 yard range. The place was clean and the people polite. I will def go back. If you have not made it out yet its worth a visit.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I need to get out there this weekend. Not sure if I'll get a membership (it's very tempting though from the reports on here), mainly want to check it out. I'm already a member at SEG and am hoping that some of their members will move ESS. From my home I think the distance is a toss up (live in Annandale, Sharpshooters is closest to me but the range is too cramped) but I work walking distance from SEG so I'll keep my memberahip there since it is nice being able to go on my lunch break to relieve stress if it's a bad day at work.
Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I'll be going to Elite tonight...got a new gun to break in (Canik TP-9 SA).

Range is only 15 mins away from me so I definitely have to check it out. I've been a long time member of the NRA range.
Does Elite allow drawing from holsters like NRA range?

Yes... but only from an OC holster, not from concealment.
The benches move out of the way, so you don't have to worry about being out of the booth or bumping the counter when you draw.
The also have fully automated presentation timers, to help with reaction time and accuracy.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
Also...you have to demonstrate competency to a range officer prior to being allowed to draw from a holster. Competency meaning being able to safely draw the firearm without flailing the muzzle or having your finger on the trigger prior to being pointed down range.bryanrheem wrote:Does Elite allow drawing from holsters like NRA range?
Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
You sure about this? I don't see this limitation in the rules. It also does not seem to track with their general outlook and policy for providing a good practice/training opportunity.MarcSpaz wrote:Yes... but only from an OC holster, not from concealment.

That's what I was told during orientation and I confirmed with the RSO.

Re: Elite shooting in Gainesville
I suspect you got some bad info. Recommend you ask a manager there. The part in the range rules (#13) about appendix carry clearly suggests what you are saying is not a rule at ESS.MarcSpaz wrote:That's what I was told during orientation and I confirmed with the RSO.
