Sounds cool. Not sure why they wouldn't come with titles, though. I guess one could apply for one, unless part of the terms of sale prohibit it.

Re: Want a Humvee?
Yeap had a look at them the other day and they are all for Off-road use only with no title. They would make for a great SHTF vehicle and be a lot of fun to play with in the backwoods or use them for Farm Use Only.

Re: Want a Humvee?
I wonder if you put "FARM USE ONLY" tags would that circumvent the "titling" process?
Re: Want a Humvee?
Not sure but they would make a heck of a good Farm Vehicle though

Re: Want a Humvee?
(1) Are the highway legal? (lights, width, etc)
(2) Is there perhaps a state where titling laws are more lax, and you could go there and title the vehicle, then transfer it to VA? I know, for instance, that Tennessee does not title trailers. I had bought a boat trailer once from another state that didn't title trailers (Alabama, I think). I then found out that for some strange reason, Virginia required that you have not only the bill of sale where you bought the trailer in a non-title jurisdiction, but that you also have the bill of sale where the person you bought it from had bought it (the last two bills of sale on the trailer). In order to cure that problem, I sold the trailer to a friend in Tennessee, who sold it to his next-door neighbor, who in turn sold it back to me. (here I will wax Sarah Palin-esque and observe that on a clear day, I can see Tennessee from home (if I go to the top of the mountain).
Perhaps similar shenanigans might yield a title to one of those HUMVEES.

Re: Want a Humvee?
There is no way I'd consider paying $10k for one, even if the thing was brand new. I spent enough time around them to know what a maintenance nightmare they can be, plus AMC hasn't said they'll even offer parts to the public yet. These vehicles were only "cool" when I could beat the snot out of them and radio back to the motor pool for a wrecker.

Re: Want a Humvee?
Farm use tags. I'm not an expert on this, by any stretch of the imagination, but I think that the farm use tags require a patch of property that, at least, somewhat resembles an actual farm (for example, if you rent an apartment in downtown Richmond, you probably won't get away with farm tags). You are limited in distance that you drive your farm vehicle away from the farm. (No trips to OBX in the John Deere) Also, any vehicle driven on public highways MUST be insured; Farm tags or not. Also, all the rules that apply to registered vehicles apply to farm vehicles, in regard to lights, brakes, tires, etc.

Farm Use tags require 10 acres. Doesn't have to be a farm, but you do have to have title to the vehicle.

Ahh, ten acres. I thought you needed something resembling a farm. I didn't know that a title was required.

Re: Want a Humvee?
no title is due to the mil version not meeting Fed civilian vehicle standards.
The had to make a bunch of changes to the base model to make the H1 sale-able.
Farm-use does not alleviate any need for a title, just registration/insurance.
Also farm use is defined in the law:
as is 'farm', and the VA SP like to nab people for mis-use of farm tagged vehicles. I wouldn't chance it unless I had a legit farm operation.

I believe this to be wrong, and just a rumor that people keep repeating. There is no reference to acreage for farm tags in VA law.Farm Use tags require 10 acres
Also farm use is defined in the law:
Code: Select all
§ 46.2-673. Return trips of exempted farm vehicles.
No person shall be required to obtain the registration certificate, license plates and decals, or pay a registration fee for any farm vehicle exempted from registration under the provisions of this article when that vehicle is:
1. Making a return trip from any marketplace;
2. Transporting back to a farm ordinary and essential food and other products for home and farm use; or
3. Transporting supplies to the farm. - TacticalMom

Re: Want a Humvee?
Meh don't those things guzzle gas/fuel? I am sure there are many other better options out there. I have my eye on a hard backed jeep. =)
Those housewives getting groceries or 30 something males that have the supped up ones that are sold in the dealership make me giggle. Living on base I saw them, and they were cool. The ones for public consumption seem like old neutered HUMV's, no use for them without their gibbly bits. I don't even know if the Public use ones can pull anything or if they will fall apart. Also I hate the name Hummers... they have always been HUMV's to me, the hummers are blech.
The military ones are cool, and I could see them being useful for (Bug Out/Off roading), way more useful than a brightly colored neutered version from the dealership.
My two cents.

About 5-6 years ago (or maybe more) a friend of mine who was a car dealer traded for an H2, and had a ball driving it around for a while. He told me that in these mountains, he got about 4 miles per gallon.

Re: Want a Humvee?
The trucks they are dumping are probably the oldest in the fleet. Most of them are equipped with a 6.2 liter Detroit Diesel naturally aspirated engine. They also have GM Hydramatic TH400 transmissions that are similar to transmissions in stepvans. They have a band type park brake not a pawl that is engaged by the transmission selector lever. It has a full time 4WD transfer case. Another oddity about the trucks is the electrical system is 24 volt not 12 volt. They said they will remove equipment with military purposes, so I am guessing they will remove the blackout drive lights, which are tied to the only light switch in the truck. If it is a "turtleback" weapons carrier, I wouldn't be surprised if they insisted the tops and ring mounts are removed. The only early trucks that had any sort of air conditioning were the ambulances. If they do sell any of the prime mover types the they will have 6.5 liter Detroit Diesel turbocharged engines and Hydramatc TH700R4 or it's derivatives for a transmission. The naturally aspirated trucks get about 10 miles to the gallon and the turbocharged trucks get 12 or a little more.
As far as the differences between civilian versus military versions. H1s are the only Hummers with any real relationship with the HMMWV (High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle). H2s have frame and drivetrain pieces from GM's 1/2 and 3/4 pickups. The H3s had parts and pieces from the Colorado/Canyon trucks. H1s had gas engines available and actually had the 6.5 turbo diesel and 700R4 transmissions before any military trucks. The civilian trucks also have 12 volt electrical systems and different seating and seatbelt systems, but the vast majority of the truck is similar.

I like bummers. They are great, but I can likely get a 15 passenger van slightly used for not much more than that and I even it won't guzzle as much gas as that hummer. I can use a 15 passenger with the back seat out for much more than I could use the hummer.
