A senseless tragedy that could have been easily prevented.

The story doesn't really say much. What actually happened?

The man was target shooting in his yard, into an inadequate backstop. Projectiles left the shooting area and struck and killed a person in a neighboring home.

I've seen other reports, that I can't find at the moment, that said the 'woods' were his backstop.

What gets me is that incidents like this are termed "accidents." The word "accident" indicates there was nothing that could have been done to prevent that occurrence. There was, in fact something that could have been done to prevent this needless death from occurring. This was negligent homicide, not an "accident."
