Virginia Gas Tax to Increase to 16.2 Cents Per Gallon Jan. 1
It's Official: Virginia Gas Tax Will Increase to 16.2 Cents Per Gallon on January 1
For the first time in 29 years, Virginia's statewide gasoline tax will increase from 11.1 cents per gallon to 16.2 cents per gallon. This change was mandated under last year's comprehensive transportation funding bill. Under the legislation, taxes are calculated on a cents per gallon basis based upon a percentage of the wholesale price of gasoline on 2/20/13. Because Congress failed to pass legislation granting Virginia the authority to force internet sellers to collect state and local taxes, the percentage of the wholesale price of gasoline increases from 3.5 to 5.1 percent which produces the new cents per gallon rate of 16.2 cents per gallon. The new rate will be in effect until June 30, 2015.
The law makes no provision for product held in inventory on December 31. Sellers need to ensure that the tax is collected at 11.1 cpg on sales up until 11:59 pm on December 31 and at the16.2 rate for sales after midnight on January 1.

Remaining unchanged is the statewide diesel tax at 20.2 cents per gallon and the local taxes in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads of 2.1 percent of the retail price.

This is what happens when you allow Progressive-lite Republicans to control the government. It's as true for Virginia as it is at the federal level. Look also at the "platypus" (as Joe Thomas called the budget bill) of a Defense Authorization Act which is filled with irrelevant pork and got 300 votes in the House.

Is VA like other states where road funds are routinely raided for other pet projects?

I guess fuel prices have dropped too much and they are lossing revenue. We're still a long way off from GW Bush era prices though. I was really hoping for sub-$2 prices this winter too.

Meet The One House Republican Willing To Call For A Gas Tax Hike
Meet The One House Republican Willing To Call For A Gas Tax Hike
Basically, we'd be too stupid to notice the higher tax due to the lower prices.WASHINGTON -- As gas prices nationwide continue to plummet, advocates for enhanced federal investment in transportation are sensing a rare political opening.
A hike in the federal gas tax -- so these advocates argue -- would have a smaller psychological impact at a time like this, when the cost of filling up is low. Congress should therefore raise the tax, for what would be the first time since 1993, in order to replenish the federal highway trust fund, which is set to run out of money around the end of May.
Using road monies for roads would solve this problem. Also, we're talking about a minor 15B shortfall. Why not take it from the 80B food stamp budget since gas prices affect the poor the worst?“No one likes taxes,” Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.) said Tuesday in an interview with The Huffington Post. “But the issue is whether we should pay for transportation, or cut back on spending and transportation and have less roads and poorer infrastructure, or borrow it from our kids -- debt financing it and hoping someone pays the debt off at a future date. And of those choices, it seems to me that the most responsible long-term approach is to do the thing that is unpopular but necessary.”
