Austin cop takes 100 yd shot with handgun to stop bad guy

Post by OakRidgeStars »

Fires his S&W M&P40 one-handed while holding the reins of TWO horses to stop an active shooter 312 feet away.

Damn.

Don't mess with Texas.

How does one even train for that particular scenario?

That is an awesome story. Most people I see at the range can't hit center mass with 2 hands, no distractions and taking their time on a target 7 yards away.

I wonder what the flight path looks like for that shot. The. LEO had to be aiming well above the attacker's head.

Even more impressive was that he made the shot in the dark (2:33 AM).

Nice shot Sgt.!!
I've see else where, that some think he may have had some competition shooting or extensive training to make this type of shot.

I've think so too, seen bullseye pistol shooters, put in very, very tight groups at 50 yards with 1911's. Even seed them fool around on a 100 yard range and hit with udderly disgusting consistency ;) very small steel plates.
All it takes is some... practice, practice, practice..

The aim point might be a little lower than you might think. If the chart is correct, aiming at the nose would put the round in the sternum. (That's with the slowest round in .40)

That's a great find! The .40SW 180 grain is what I run. 13"+ at 100 yards isn't bad at all. I figured a slow, fat bullet would have more of a curve to it.

I'm going to try to go to the today. If I do, I'm going to see how I do at 50 and 100 yards. Assuming the RSO is okay with it.

Yeah, but barrel length wasn't posted that I could find. Still, it's good to explore your, and your equipment's potential. Let us know how it goes.

And even so, I am impressed with the LEO performance in this instance.

I suspect that that area of Austin is quit well lit even at that time of night.
Also there might have been more lights on due to the shooting going on.

It did take me quite a while to find a story that verified that the kill shot was to the heart and also the perp was wearing a "load bearing tactical vest" not "body armor".
