Have a few questions as far as obtaining FFL....

Post by Diggs27 »

Hello there.... I live in the Monterey area (Highland Co.); and the thought has really been crossing my mind here lately about taking some courses in the gunsmithing field. I was out with a hunting buddy this past week; and the firing pin in his .30-06 went bad; and he was griping about the fact he now has to lug the gun to Staunton to get the repair done. Him saying this really got the ball rolling in my mind that if I could learn how to do some "minor" repairs it could really open up some doors for myself and may be able to make a business of it (especially considering you gotta drive an hour one way or more to have even minor repairs done). I have been doing a lot of research here lately; and have seen that even if you are repairing guns in your own home for others and making a profit on it; you do need an FFL... I went on ATF website and seen that FFL "type 1" covers dealers and gunsmiths; so that made my mind start spinning even more. With a "level 1" FFL; would I also be able to sell firearms on consignment for others as well as operate a gunsmithing business??? Also; does that mean I would be able to purchase a firearm online from a site such as Cheaper than dirt, or someplace similar (if someone were looking for a peticular firearm that I was able to find on there cheaper)? One other question... I see the application fee for an FFL is $200; but how long is it good for... does it have to be renewed on a yearly basis; or is it a few years? Is the fee the same price each time you renew?? This is all fairly new to me; but now I have all these thoughts going through my mind about possibly opening a small shop here in town (there is one store front for lease that has been empty for quite some time; and from what I understand, the company who rents it out only charges about $400 a month). Any one who can help me with any information; I would greatly appreciate it.

Terms... not a level 1, but a type 1 ffl

Yes, you can engage in retail trade buy/sell/consign/transfer.

You won't beat buds/cdnn. The volume they move is huge compared to what you could move in a small retail shop.

3 years

Look at insurance for gunsmithing before you dream to far. Have a buddy who just opened a retail shop, and I don't know 100% what its like, but I'm learning quite a bit from him.
