From what I read, the suppressors were added into the 1934 NFA due to extreme cases of poaching in national forests. This was during the Depression, and Congress was upset that "...serfs would even dare to shoot the King's deer..." to survive.
And so it goes... If this is true? It needs to be redacted, and changed in Congress. Because that's utter CRAP reason for adding it!

The NFA and GCA all need to be repealed due to violating Constitutional law... but, I digress.
Actually, they were added due to their high use in gang crimes, such as Mafia driven mass shooting and executions. Congress actually specified the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre as an example.
The tax rate of $200 was set in 1934 to make it almost impossible for someone to legally make and transfer an NFA item. Considering the average person in the US made about $1,500 a year back then, it made it impossible for the average Joe to own one.
If they were to adjust that tax for today's economy, you are looking at just shy of $8,000 for a tax stamp. The average person in the US earns about $51,000 a year. We average about 36% in taxes between state, federal, SS, UDI, AHCPPA, etc., leaving about $32,000 take home. So, roughly 25% of your annual take-home pay to buy a suppressor, SBR or machine gun. And that doesn't include the purchase price of a machine gun of about $35,000 due to the ridiculous artificial market value.
Imagine that... we need 100% of 1.25 years of salary to buy a machine gun? Sound pretty obscene when you say it like that doesn't it?
