If methane is worse for the green house effect than CO2 then it would be better if they collected it out of the hole and burned it to heat the local homes. Thus turning it into CO2 and H20.
Note: Methane is CH4.
Actually, natural gas used to heat homes IS primarily methane and methane is what is the cause of most mine explosions, other than coal dust in coal mines.
