Fort Lee personal weapons range closed

Post by Doc7 »

After moving here a few months ago, last night I virtually accidentally ran across the information that there was a shooting range open to civilians over at Fort Lee (a couple miles from my house). Man, was I so excited. I called a few mins ago to ask if I could shoot prone position there and make sure it wasn't scheduled closed this Sunday and found out it closed 4 and a half months ago. The gentleman I spoke to said to call back in a few weeks to see if a re opening was scheduled.

It was likely in response to the Texas shooting and tightening up security. No more excuses for non-MLE to be transporting weapons on base. I think a lot of base ranges are closed to non-military now.

Incorrect Spaz...Let's not be part of the fear mongering.. closed due to the passing of the long time range master and they haven't busted their tails to find a replacement.

Thanks for that information. Maybe that's why he said to call back - maybe the hiring process is underway.

Do you know if when open that range had shooting from benches as as well as field positions (such as prone?). Even though Colonial Shooting Academy in Richmond lets me shoot a 22 rifle I can't lay on the floor and shoot it. And their "benches" aren't set up for rifle either, let one the 25 yard limitation.

Just want to shoot reasonably close to Colonial Heights.

No fear mongering here. I have family who are active duty. Tried to use ranges on two Army bases as a guest with my family members. Both ranges said no civilians. One said it was a new policy this year. It was right after the second Ft. Hood shooting. I was just trying to put 2 and 2 together. Figured it was all Army bases.

Edit: Just re-read the OP's post and realized he said it was closed altogether. I thought he said it was closed to civilians.

I've shot there dozens of times. It is about 5 miles from my house . so very convenient. Haven't shot there in the last year since I now have my own Range. The Range Master did die several months ago and I was informed that a new R.M. was in the process of being assigned. Range hours have always been Sunday's 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday's 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Usually closed in Summer because of Reserves .

Snakester,

I'm in Colonial Heights so in a similar situation as far as distance. Do they let you shoot prone?
