waiting in Henrico

Post by Savvage »

As I was walking out of the county clerk office in henrico county VA today, I walked passed the prison. I couldn't help but think how much easier it is to be a criminal and an outlaw than it is to legally carry my handgun to protect my family and myself. I have been around firearms all my life, hunting rabbit,Pheasant and Deer as a boy growing up in PA, to the time I spent In the us Army as a member of the 2/75 Rangers where I spent hundreds of hours on the range or a tire house or small arms repair classes(this is 35 yrs ago). and the many days I spent teaching what I knew to my sons as they grew up and learned to shoot and hunt, now my oldest grandson turned 12 this year and I look forward being with him and his father as he teaches what I taught him years ago. I have had my share of pistols when I was younger but it had been 30 years since I owned a hand gun. but seeing the events of the last 5 yrs have made me feel that it is in my families and my self best interest to have the ability to protect me and mine. even with a clean record and a long history around fire arms I have had to jump thru so many hoops I feel like a circus animal. When I went to get my pistol (cz p-09) it took 10 days for the background check from NICS to clear me just to purchase my weapon. now after a 4 page application , swearing I'm not a liar, self addressed and stamped envelope ,a 50 dollar NON REFUNDABLE fee and a 45 day wait just to feel safe in my home and neighborhood. has somewhat upset me, maybe its just me lacking patience but it sure seems like a lot of BS to be able to take advantage of my 2nd amendment rights . it is so much easier to be a criminal than to be a law abiding citizen. Ok I really need to vent I feel better now

I am a husband ,father of 2 sons and pawpaw to 6 grandkids we reside in Henrico VA. along with the protection issue me and the wife( my sons and their wives) started going to ranges and shooting just because its fun and a great way to spend time together.after everything I had to go thru I realized how much more difficult it is to legally own a handgun compared to 30 yrs ago. so I decided it is way pass time to start doing my part to protect my rights so my grandkids, grandkids can have the same rights I enjoy. Adolf Hitler said the way to subject people is to Disarm them. not on my watch, this is me doing that the best thing I can do is to get with like minded people who have 1 common cause

We all choose to do right, not because it's easy but because it's the right thing to do.

I can't figure why it took 10 days for a background check.
It usually takes me about 10 minutes.

Background checks are all in the name. The more common the name the longer it takes. Mine go through in minutes while friends take a while. Only option to speed it up is to give your social which I don't do out of principle.

apparently there are a lot of people with my name and a few of them are felons, so my 2nd amendment rights are in the hands of some clerk who decides if I am who I say I am or not. it really bothers me that I am completely helpless and the decision of getting a firearm was taken completely out of my hands and was decided by a clerk who doesn't know me from Adam.
now ya done it Smltooner ,you made me think about and got my blood boiling and I need a nitro tablet! lol just kiddin buddy but at the time I was extremely hot.

This is an excellent time to ask a question I have been wondering about. I have heard that if I have a concealed weapons permit I don't have to go thru NICS Background check is there any truth to this

Virginia has a concealed handgun permit (CHP).. It is for handguns only. The permit allowed you to purchase multiple handguns in a 30 day period which you were not permitted to do without the CHP.. However the one handgun a month law (without a CHP) has since been repealed.

I would like to Thank everyone for the warm welcome, I am looking forward to making some new friends and and getting more involved in enjoying and protecting my 2nd amendment rights. I am looking to make some shooting buddies in my area I like to shoot every chance I get, and getting the family together to go shooting is tough at times so I find myself at the range shooting by myself. kind a sucks with nobody telling me how bad of a shot I am lol :pistol:

Welcome... :welcome:

And to borrow a phrase, with small edits:
We choose to do good. We choose to do good, not because it is easy, but because it is hard, because that good will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.
