You want a new vehicle why?

Post by Swampman »

"This document initiates rulemaking that would propose to create a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, FMVSS No. 150, to require vehicle-to-vehicle communication capability for light vehicles," says NHTSA's dryly-worded notice.
But don't worry,
In announcing its proposed rulemaking, NHTSA is stressing its intention to protect the "privacy" of American drivers.
Whew! That's a load off my mind!

Not to mention the fact that new Government Motors vehicles equipped with On-star can track you location even if the system hasn't been activated by the consumer.

If you have to bug out, why tell them where you're going?

I'm ending "Year Six" of the "Mythical Truck" search.

It's like a white whale at this point... But you know what? Nah worrying about it.

New vehicle? Nope. Do not want.

Aside from the fact that they are all ugly, cheap looking, chunks of plastic, I am distrustful of computer controlled vehicles. Imagine that the computer that controls your shifting develops a short one night, as you are driving in the rain, and it just randomly decides that it's time to shift into reverse. Fun times, but no thanks.

I miss my '73 Galaxy. 400 cubic inches under the hood, rear wheel drive, a back seat that could accommodate Andre the Giant, Mr. T, and entourage, no computers, and red Mexican dingleballs hanging from the ceiling.

Oh yeah, and a trunk that could actually transport 5 months of groceries, along with supplies for a dozen different home improvement projects, AND a full size spare tire.

Never should have sold the Ol'Gal.

Lemme express my displeasure over "Drive-by-wire" controls.

It's why I didn't buy a NEWER car! It feels slushy, and takes too long in my opinion to respond to my reactions.

SHMIV is correct! The Truck search got "complicated" when I put MANUAL and GEAR ACTUATED 4x4 on the requirements. I just don't trust push-button 4x4 with non-locking hubs.

$300 replacement keys. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about modern vehicles.

shrug, I bought a new ram 2500 sat w/ diesel. activated my Uconnect also. They told me they could track it, but I know I could disable it if I wanted to. Everything is drive by wire vs cable nowadays, even Harley M/Cs. I shopped 2 years and almost bought a manual 2500, but tired of shifting quickly in town just test driving it.

I had the "New Truck Bug " a few months ago...Went over to local Toyota Dealer . Looked at the few they had that was equiped like I would want......$32K and some change. I don't think so. $8K more than my 2004 Tacoma cost New ! I'll drive this one a little longer. At this time I would rather spend my $$$ on something else !

Looking for something old (20 or more years) to replace my '02 Explorer with almost 286,000 on it.

I think I've settled on an early 90's F250 4x4. Kind of like that square, boxy look. There's a decent looking one running around Front Royal. Maybe I'll see if I can talk to the guy next time I see him, just to see what kind of issues he has.

Something that old needs all the rubber parts (gaskets, bushings, etc.) replaced first, then I'll start working on the metal parts in the running gear. Rear end gets an overhaul along with the tranny and lastly, the engine.

Now if I could only hit that danged lottery . . . :hysterical:

I had an early 80's F100, several years ago. I had a straight 6 under the hood. I hated that truck with a passion.

However, I will say that it was a quick and easy fix when the starter gave out. Fortunately, I was at a grocery store with a parts store near by. Quick walk to the parts store, bought a new starter, walked back to the truck, and 2 beers later, starter was replaced. Oh, and it was night time.

As much as I hated that POS, it was the easiest thing to work on. Probably had everything to do with the ridiculous amount of space that the straight 6 left open.

I just drop a new motor, and even tranny in mine every 10 years or so. The '00 S-10 has about 8K mile on it.
The '95 Ford has about the same.
The 3 year 100K warranty restarts with each change too.

I have a '14 Mustang GT, love it. Drive by wire and torque management are easily defeated with a tune.

I have two 2013 Mustangs. Love em'... so fast it's insane. I have the SCT pro tuner software. If you know how to tune cars and have access to a dyno, you can disable a heck of a lot of stuff, not only to be more stealth, but to reduce CPU overhead, making the computer able to respond faster to remaining enabled sensor readings.

I was thinking about getting a classic from the late 60's, early 70's because of all the tracking stuff though.

Eye and head tracking to be installed on new GM vehicles?

Another good reason to stick with older models.
