Just got a fishing kayak
Just got a fishing kayak
Got one about a week ago. My son and his friends have been fishing out of them for about a year now.
Successful first "voyage" - went to Chesdin Landing Park and paddled around the cove and fished for about 4 hrs. the afternoon/evening I got it.
Planning on fishing some of the area small lakes (Amelia, Powhatan, Nottoway) to get used to paddling and fishing out of it before going to the smaller rivers next. I've been scoping out the small lakes, upper Appomattox and Nottoway Rivers for about a week on Google Earth. Those two rivers will be next and hopefully early this fall I'll feel comfortable enough to try the upper James.
Years ago I floated a couple sections in a john boat and I know they're not bad, I just want to get my confidence up in the kayak first before trying to fish a bigger river.
Anybody else kayaking/fishing?

Not much into fishing. My brother in law is, though, as is my sister.
Matter of fact, it was on a kayak fishing trip, when my brother in law proposed to my sister. He tied the ring to his fishing line and cast it right into her lap.
I guess there's no telling what you may catch, when fishing from a kayak.

Kayak fishing is not advised as it violates the two prime rules of fishing:
1. Don't exert any energy other than to cast a line or open a can/bottle and consume its contents.
2. Always have room for beer.
If you continue with this behavior and get ostracized from the fishing community, don't say I didn't warn ya.

Aw Heck you can float a cooler behind the Kayak and you would be just fine.

I briefly owned something called a "gunnoe". Sort of a flat-bottomed, slightly wider canoe designed to hunt from; you were supposed to be able to fire a 12-gauge shotgun (or even two of them) over the beam without tipping it over. Idea was to float the Clinch and Powell Rivers for wood ducks. Got rid of it after one trip. Too unstable, too uncomfortable, and too easy to end up using your $1,000 shotgun ($1,000 back then; $1,500 now) for a boat paddle. Kayaks would have been fun when I was 20. But they ain't for fat old men with bad backs.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

Dorm, I think that I own one of what you're talking about. Sort of looks like a jon boat and a kayak got drunk and frisky one night, and a funny looking short and wide little boat was theresult? A buddy of mine gave it to me. I have never used it.

Could be. I remember it was called a "gunnoe" - - - you know; a conflation of the words "gun" and "canoe". Don't remember how they spelled it, even. Just that it sounded like a much better idea than it actually was. May have been OK in a river or other water with no shoals, but it didn't work worth a damn where there was water that was shallow enough to see rocks in.

I got a Perception Pescador 12 footer. Its a fishing kayak. You sit on it, not down in it. If you turn it over, you've fall out/off, sort of like a canoe.
So far its more stable than I expected. I got caught sideways by the wake of a bassboat going up the river and didn't come close to turning over. I got hung up on a tree at Amelia Lake and had to rock it/paddle it off. It got my attention, as I'd never done it before, but it was no problem. Could I turn it over, sure, but I'm not going to do it on purpose.
After this weekend I think I'd rather go to the upper Appomattox next weekend vs. another small lake. Its just a little too warm in most of those small lakes. We''ll see what happens.

Yep. The fat old guy with a bad back. If it ain't 4 feet wide or better and if it doesn't have a seat with a back, I'll stick to bank fishin.
