Carrying Sig P250 (threaded barrel)

Hey all. Newbie here. I have a Glock 17, but am looking to purchase a .45. One of the guns I'm looking at is the Sig P250.

However, on reading the "Virginia Gun Owner's Guide" there's a section that talks about not being able to open carry guns capable of having a silencer in certain locales. One of the locales is Fairfax and then counties surrounding that location, which includes Loudoun, where I live. Concealed Carrying one doesn't seem to be an issue, only open carry (if I'm understanding it correctly).

Looking at the Sig P250's specifications, it has a threaded barrel, which I assume is for adding a silencer.

I was just curious if anyone's had a problem with this, be it with the Sig P250, or any other similar handgun. Anyone gotten into trouble? Again, if I was to use it just for concealed carry it wouldn't be an issue. But I want to know what options I have or what I need to look out for in buying any gun.

the above statement sounds suspicious, in anycase you obviously don't own a suppressor so are you planning to buy one? i don't get why you ask... cause whats the point of 'carrying' a threaded barrel?

Here is the relevant code....followed by an explanation. This is one of the statutes that I always explain in my class.

18.2-287.4. Carrying loaded firearms in public areas prohibited; penalty.

It shall be unlawful for any person to carry a loaded (a) semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol that expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine that will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock or (b) shotgun with a magazine that will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered on or about his person on any public street, road, alley, sidewalk, public right-of-way, or in any public park or any other place of whatever nature that is open to the public in the Cities of Alexandria, Chesapeake, Fairfax, Falls Church, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, or Virginia Beach or in the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Henrico, Loudoun, or Prince William.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to law-enforcement officers, licensed security guards, military personnel in the performance of their lawful duties, or any person having a valid concealed handgun permit or to any person actually engaged in lawful hunting or lawful recreational shooting activities at an established shooting range or shooting contest. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The exemptions set forth in § 18.2-308 shall apply, mutatis mutandis, to the provisions of this section.


Short answer is, get your CHP and you are exempt.

WRW, I have their printed promotional catalog/brochure and it lists both the P250 and P250 Compact as having the threaded barrel, the sub-compact does not. I guess I'll just have to look closely at the actual gun, since their promotional material doesn't sync up.

I just wanted to know, in case I do go with a P250 and it DOES have the threaded barrel, that I know I can't open carry (even with the CHP). I'm not planning on getting a silencer so I don't need the threaded barrel. But if that's what it comes with, this stupid code could influence my selection of a .45.

you can buy it without the threaded barrel. i would suggest checking their website, the catalog doesn't show every available model or configuration, only select things.

why not the P220 compact? that is a fine pistol! just curious.

There is no distinction between OC and CC in that statute. If you have a CHP, you are exempt either way.

That's interesting. Hope I never feel the need for a threaded barrel, but it's good to know.

why not the P220 compact? that is a fine pistol! just curious.

The P220 is on my list... if I can find one cheap. It's a bit more expensive than the P250 in .45. Money is one of the factors I have to use in my decision. The other guns on the list are the Ruger P345, Beretta PX4 .45, and S&W M&P45c.

I was just referring to what the code listed it as being. Clearly, I'm not the expert everyone else is on here... which is one of the reasons I am here: to learn.

(Hmm... doubt this would be a good legal argument though... "But your honor, the code says a "silencer." What I have is a Suppressor.")

MuShuGordon, No, I'm keeping the Glock. The .45 (if I do get one, it's not set in stone), is just an additional gun.
