Now THAT's what I call a real tractor pull!

Post by dorminWS »

100 year old steam tractor turns a high horsepower John Deere tractor into an expensive ditch digging attachment. A very good illustration of elementary physics.

850 HP vs 18 HP

This is pretty cool even if you've never held a hoe in your life.

A 850 H.P. John Deere diesel vs. a steam tractor rated at 18 H.P.
It's all about torque and traction. Enjoy.

Is it fair that the bar is set so low on the Deere? That force vector lifts the rear wheels, killing traction.

Let's not forget that Ol Bessie probably outweighs the JD by a ton or three.

How does the Navy push a 92,000ton Aircraft Carrier to 35knots?
STEAM, Baby! Nuclear powered reactor just boils the water...

Where will the JD or Nimitz be in 90yrs???
Compare that to the Steam Tractor, which will STILL be running, no Mr. Fusion needed.

True. Plenty of weight and a ton of torque. I used to have a 1955 CJ-5 Jeep. 4 cylinder engine and narrow tires. It was low horsepowered and geared low, so it was all I could do to get up to 50 mph wide open . Back in the 1970s, when the Ford Bronco pretty much started the 4WD craze, I used to pull lots of Broncos (with their V-8 engines and highway-speed gearing) and International Scouts out of holes they could only sit in and spin out a deeper hole. The old Jeep would just putter through the same hole. Same deal.

I'd be curious to know what V8 diesel was stuffed under that Deere's bonnet. It sounds like it was in England so it would properly be called the bonnet. John Deeres have always been notorious lightweights in the '70s you had to get a 70 horsepower Deere to get the same weight as a 42 horsepower International. If you ever watched any tractor or truck pulling, they don't divide the classes by horsepower. it is strictly done based on weight and that steamer had a lot more @$$ than the JD. I do like that the Deere didn't have his front axle pulling. He probably would have knocked the front end or clutch out of it in just a few quick tugs. Of course he could have already tore up the front end prior to this attempt.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

I just had to quote that line. I can almost hear Willie Nelson singing "To all the hoes I've held before..."
