Squirrel Hunting Report. Zephyp and Goodoleboy. 9/3/09

Post by goodoleboy »

Started out around 9 Am, headed out and had to stop at Reston Town Center(I think) Dick's to renew my license. From there we proceeded to the sighting in range at Phelps WMA to get the sights on my 10/22 in order. Once that was done we proceeded to head into the woods. It was slow going....Dk and I wound up splitting up. I eventually settled down near a small stand of new growth trees and waited. ~2pm or so I saw one to the left of me in a brush pile, which didn't seem like a good shot but I decided to take it anyways as he wasn't coming out of the brush after around 5 minutes. Lined up, waitied for him to stop, and then -nothing-.....safety on.......made the gun hot and -click0.......miss fire.......racked a new round in and -pew-.......miss. Roughly 10 minutes after that one ran off I decided to turn around and look the other way.....only to find a another one running around on a dirt pile behind me. Not really thinking(Ex-should have not whiped the rifle up) I whipped the rifle up to which it replied by taking off.....toward me. Not really thinking at this point, except to check behind it quickly to make sure I was clear, I proceeded to crack off a round which, surprisingly, caused it to stop. He was close enough to switch to the iron sights which you can see through the scope rings. Now, at this point, I should mention the fact that adrenalin is a weird thing and it turns out that it gets dumped into your system when a squirrel is standing in front of you. In short it went along the lines of the last one.....-pew- miss.
Now, a little while later I met up with DK at the truck and we proceeded to head to a different spot. More of the same, saw two more, too far into the brush and out of range for my little .22. Overall it was a good day, good company, and just good to get out for the first time in a few years.

Breakdown:

The only squirrel I saw all day was the one in Cody's living room - in a cage. Had a good time though. We will return to the same place once the leaves start falling. They'll be able to run but not hide... :hysterical:

Meh, the place isn't known as the best place to find squirrel by a long shot. So for me to have two of them hopin around near me in the course of 10-15 minutes has to be an all time record for that place. Plus I haven't been hunting in about two years so I just gotta get back on my game. As for squirrel fever....I think next time I might take out the 20 Gauge, prevent a lot missing from close range.

Looks like you need a big shotgun there good buddy. Come hang out on my deck or where I shoot. I drove by the land today (mother's boyfriend's house) where I shoot and saw three squirrels on his barn.

I am glad it was fun for you guys though. I have never gotten into the woods to hunt. My father was never into it really and I spent most of my time growing up in the pool, so I do not have experiences of it yet. I am in NO way, shape or form blaming my father, he is a great dad and I love him dearly. I will get in the woods soon though.

Let us know if you want to drive up to VA and next we go you can come along. Dont promise any squirrels but we can traipse through the woods and look for them.

Hey Cody. Im thinking about going again on the 24th. Let me know if you're up for it. Maybe someone else will join in and we can catch them in a cross fire... :machinegun:

I think I'll be able to get away. I worked real hard cleaning the new house so Young will give me a break...

*Hits up Google Maps.*

Stinking 5 and a half hours away. Crapola. Doesn't look like I'll be making the squirrel hunt. Guess I will have to stick to shooting them in my backyard.

Too bad I can't come and show you all up with my little 17 Mach II. I know you would be wanting to shoot that thing.
