I carry a Jetbeam TCR-1 or TCR-2. I like the adjustable intensity. I like how the titanium looks. It feels great in hand because of the contours. It's waterproof and resistant to shock.

That's pretty much my point, grump. You can't have a one-size-fits all plan. But you can make up your mind to try to stop the guy even at the risk of your own life. Again: with the proviso that you don't really know how stress will affect you in the moment.

Most of the EDC lights I see are more expensive than one might wish for something that may get destroyed/lost with heavy use. The mini-mag lights, in this sense, are great. The LED's are be nice but last I checked a LED MM vs Non-LED was $30 vs $10. This is a bit cheaper than you may need to be but for $10 you can get a pocket sized Non-Led flashlight which will last an hour or so and comes sealed, water tight, and is sturdy/big enough to be used as a impact device. Once ended up swimming home in Aquia Creek past mid-night and it made for a good companion. If I lose one I just pick up another without breaking the bank.

As for using it, or preferably something much stronger, to stop an active shooter, there is a reason that people train with non-constant (on) weapon lights. Your position is immediately shown and, as others have said, they may/will shoot the only thing they can see. If your stuck with nothing but a light in work/school/ect. maybe try and get one with a glass/face breaker on the back side.

Use your head. If you can't carry a gun/baton/pepper spray, what about an unopened can of soda, or a baseball. If you can get away with it, how about a cane?


Age may or may not be a factor, I am 33 years old and had to use a cane for a week once. I still use walking poles anytime I am going to be on uneven ground. I have severely damaged ankles so I can quite literally fall over at anytime. Additionally I am preggers so I am off balance already.

I bought 5 from Armslist. 2 still work (kinda) after 6 months. Too unreliable for me and worth exactly what they cost.

Specifically, the button/switches seem to crap out easily and either won't turn on or off, sometimes at random times. None were used strenuously.

+1 for the Fenix. I got more than I paid for with that one and I have used it as described by setting it to strobe in an aggressive crackhead's face in NYC.

I've been using an Olight i6 paladin for over a year now . It's pretty sweet and super tough. Before to that I had a Fenix L2D that I finally broke and a 4Sevens Preon 2 that I also broke. I think my next light will be a Olight M18

My EDC flashlight is a Sunwayman V11R. Love the low power ability and it will go bright if needed. It will run on 1.2 to 3.6 volt. With the AA-extender that came with it, it will run AA sized cells including alkaline, NiCad, NiMH, Lithium, and 14500 (Lipo rechargeable). With the extender removed it will run CR123, and RCR (Lipo rechargeable). I almost went with a Zebralight SC5 instead and would probably been happy with that too, based on how I use my Sunwayman.

I still read maps, this flashlight wont wash out the colors on the Map like other flashlight will do.

Correction, The one i have is restricted issue, they do have models for the Gen Public.
