Moving to VA in weeks...

Post by Doc7 »

Hello all,

Just accepted a job in VA so I will be getting the heck out of NJ and coming to a free state! Hopefully in early June.

I will be working near Emporia VA but for the first year or so at least (and probably longer term) we will be leaving in or very close to the Chesterfield county area. The wife will be working in Richmond or Ashland and isn't quite ready for a house on 20 acres in the middle of woods (though that's my dream).

Am I going to be able to small game hunt within a reasonable drive of that area and fish and shoot? I worry that somehow we might settle on the one part of VA that doesn't get me closer to hunting (45 mins) than I am now, not closer to a serious fishing opportunity, or opportunities to shoot at a place that lets me shoot prone, offhand, pistol drawing from a holster etc.

Thanks for any advice. Hopefully in two years she's ready to move to the woods but for now I will be making the hike and living in what I imagine is a more suburban area.

Congrats man and you should really keep working on your wife about the acreage thing, even though I'm dealing with the same with my wife and her idiot mother!

Looks to me like Powhatan WMA might take care of my fishing and hunting itches (and even camping...anywhere I want...in the woods, for free?? Not allowed up here on state lands!

Doc, I live in Chesterfield and am a member at Blackcreek outdoor range in Mechanicsville. They have a pistol only range as well as 25, 50, and 100yd rifle ranges. Bench and prone shooting can be done at all 3 rifle ranges. PM me if you want more info. As for fishing its not my thing but I see lots of folks fishing on the James river.

Welcome. I also used to live in NJ and live in Richmond now. Powhatan and Amelia both have WMA public hunting areas. There are also lots of hunt clubs with land in the area.
