.22LR shortage causing some strange stuff

Post by dorminWS »

My go-to FFL guy told me last week he had a case of .22LR stolen while in transit via UPS. They found the empty case outside of their Bristol, VA terminal. Had to be an inside job, he said. And I'd just told him the week before to have a pistol shipped UPS instead of USPS at 4 times the shipping cost because I didn't trust the post Office. Now the pistol is overdue; but then again, they've promised it sand then not delivered it 4-5 times already so who knows what's really happened? I guess the only think you can count on is that you can't count on anything.

I doubt that .22LR will be the only ammo being nicked.

I haven't seen any in months. I have 1000 rounds I am afraid to spend because I may not find anymore anytime soon... if ever.

I keep stockpiling cci minimag and velocitor with no intention of using it. If anyone is near Inwood, WV you could try Valley Guns they had some in stock a while back.

About 6 weeks ago, I ordered (online) a box of 525 count .22 cal from a dealer in Montana for $112.00.
About 4 weeks ago, I was at my local FFL asking if he had any .22 cal. He said yes...$75.00 for 525 count and he was storing them in his safe.
Before these 2 purchases, the last .22 cal I purchased was $29.00 for 525 count 2 years ago.

I still don't get where all the 22 is. It's understandable other calibers are bought by state and federal agencies for "training", but are they really buying up 22 as well?

Interesting. I'm sure all the pricks that buy it up (who probably don't even own a 22lr firearm) just to gouge people are a big part of it.

Ive heard several stories of people that find out places like Walmarts delivery times and wait and just buy up the limit and go to the next one and that's how they spend their mornings.

I reckon that continued talk of and belief in a shortage causes the shortage, in part. If not for that, would folks still be buying up .22 at such ridiculous rates?

I talk to folks at the ammo cases at Wally World locations all over the country; all of them hold the same opinion of the folks who wait around to snatch up .22 for the purposes of reselling at inflated prices. The same opinion is held in regard to the employees who set it aside for themselves and friends.

As this is a family friendly forum, I shall refrain from repeating the aforementioned opinions; I imagine that y'all can figure the gist of it, anyway.

These guys also state a refusal to do business with that sort, and have placed a cap on the amount they are willing to pay per round.

Thus far, I have not heard a single person state a willingness to pay inflated prices.

We'll see what happens.

A few months back I was able to buy 500 round bulk packs of Remington Thunderbolt .22LR from Midway for $20.99 each (plus the $15.00 shipping). I placed my e-mail address on their "Notify List"...and would get an e-mail notice every 2 weeks or so saying that the ammo was in-stock - had to be quick to get it, but I was able to place an order 3 times. For the last 3 or 4 weeks though...nothing, not a peep out of them and I currently must have 15 or 20 various brands of .22LR on their "Notify List". Nothing, nada, zip!!

I haven't seen .22LR available locally for almost a year...won't buy it at the big gun shows because of the grossly inflated prices (same with some brick and mortar retailers). Makes me wonder if the manufacturers are putting more effort into center fire ammo. I hear rumors that the big manufacturers like Remington and Winchester are producing millions of rounds of rim fire per month...but I sure don't see any. Alas, they say patience is a virtue, but I'm fast becoming a "virtueless" old man

I know of at least one gun shop that admitted they buy their 22 from a retailer and then re-sell it. If more than just that shop is doing it, then there's part of the problem.

I used to get the 525 bricks at gander on sale for 20 bucks and then get the 4 dollar mail in rebate. 16 bucks after rebate.

My favorite .22LR is the Federal Champion ("blue box") 36 grain hollow point. I used to get 525 boxes, and the 325 "nitrogen packed" cans....

Between those, unicorns, and a leprechaun with a rainbox shootin' out his keister, which do you think I will see first?

Since we're remembering, I remember right before Newtown started this sh't. Wal-mart ALWAYS had BlueBox, and it was $26.95
