Great organization. But if Christiansburg is in "SW Virginia"at all, it is on the extreme eastern fringe of it. 'Round here, we regard those parts as being in CENTRAL VA.

Tell ya what, dude:

Get yourself a map of Virginia. Stick a pin through the northernmost point in Accomack County, which would also the easternmost point in the Commonwealth. Then fold the map over and stick the same pin through Cumberland Gap at the westernmost point in the westernmost county of Lee. Smoothing the map out flat while the two ends are pinned together, crease the map in the middle where you have folded it. The fold will therefore be the east-west midpoint of the Commonwealth of Virgina. That crease will run through Bedford, VA, which is less than 50 air miles from Christiansburg.

So whatever the popular misconception may be, as a geographical matter, Christiansburg is in central Virginia; and the "Richmond/tri-cities area" you refer to is in eastern Virginia. Just because y'all don't know we're out here doesn't mean we aren't.

There are several ways of finding the center. It can be based on the mid-point of the extreme points. It can be based on the center of mass of based on land area. It can also be based on the center of mass based on population.

The folding-the-map method is the first. The other two are high-school or entry-level college physics problems.

Encircle Richmond, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville - voila! Central VA.

Look closely at the center of that circle and you will note the intersection of 522 and 33... Cuckoo, where yours truly was born and raised.

Nova, Southside, East Virginia, all self explanatory... Roanoke, Blacksburg, Christiansburg - all solidly SW Va.

Now down there where ol' Dorm is from, that's big toe country, 'cuz when you look at map of Va, it looks like a big toe on a foot. And you look at their big toe to tell where they are from... If the big toe is longer, they are from VA, if the toe next to it is longer, they are displaced West Virginians.

We who live out here in God's country have a longstanding meme that "Virginia ends at Roanoke".in the eyes of most of our otherwise erudite and well-informed fellow Virginians. The Great Secret that y'all aren't privy to is that while Virginia does indeed end at Roanoke, IT BEGINS AT CUMBERLAND GAP.

They call Dormin-Town "far SW VA".

But everything is relative.

The general concept is generally introduced with physics, which fourth graders don't do. Furthermore, the general case involving an arbitrary body requires calculus. And doing this for an irregular shape, such as the state of VA, may only involve addition, multiplication, and division, but it would be beyond a fourth-grader's ability.

Just one more reason why it doesn't make any sense to do anything but my approach to start with. Besides, if you'd flatten Southwest Virginia out, Virginia would be a perfect rectangle. Didn't you know that?

They do purport to be the gateway to Southwest Virginia. But that's so they can dominate what actually IS SW VA. That way they can influence what comes our way and take some of it if possible. That's also because Roanoke is about as far west as the state bureaucrats are willing to get from Richmond, and that way they can claim they've been to SW VA but still get back to Richmond for (late) supper. So a lot of "southwest regional" offices of state agencies land there. Roanoke ain't Richmond, but it is deemed marginally fit for the Richmond bureaucrats - for short periods. They don't actually have anything in common with SW VA except the railroads. If you want to know where the line between Central and SW VA is, think about I-77.
