Anyone Else See the Meteor

Post by Hammer »

Anyone else in the DC Metro area see the meteor last night around 7PM? We were just finishing dinner and a light flashed across the sky. My wife had her back to the window so didn't see it. So of course it may have been my imagination. Figured meteor, but seemed so close. Maybe a UFO I joked. Confirmed this morning on WTOP. Not the UFO part, just the streak of light. Said it may have been a fireball. ...or prehaps an alien scout craft? Better clean your weapons ladies and gentlemen. Last few alien movies I saw they didn't turn out to be too friendly. Not advocating violence...just say'n.

You know why UFO's always go to the Rural areas for their expeditions?

Because they know Rednecks, and Hillbillies are the SMARTEST ones on this planet! :hysterical:

If it was in the DC metro area, maybe it was just the truth crashing and burning. :coffee:

Remember the show where the captain got the borgs into the holodeck and removed the safeguards - so the Thompson subgun worked? Those .45 caliber slugs tore'em up big time. I'll bet the 150 grain FMJ rounds from my M1 Garand would do a job as well.

As the man on the M14 Forums sig line says, ".30 caliber bullets, turning cover into concealment since 1906."

Im in central VA. I saw them talking about it on the 11 o'clock news. When I walked the dog a couple hours later, I saw a pretty good streak running from North to South.

I think all the joking about aliens is a bit childish. There's more important things to worry about like why all of my neighbors have been missing all day.

At this point in my life, I'm more worried about the zombies than anything from space. Have you guys seen these things just crawlin' around the Hill? Its like a Pub crawl, only they are brain-dead insteadd of drunk.

I actually got that joke... but with my sense of humor, it was likely just a fluke.

Since we're off on a tangent.

I learned a little late that it's not a good idea to refer to your first wife as "my first wife" while you're still married to her.
I did, however, call my second wife "my LAST wife" and I still do.

LOL! I was wondering who would catch that. I tease her once in awhile and introduce her as my "future ex-wife". Always good for a laugh. Usually because she smacks me and my friends laugh at me... but good for a laugh no the less.

I think after almost 23 years, I'm not going anywhere.

BTW... we actually have a meteor shower season don't we? I seem to remember hearing there is a specific time of year that they occur most frequently.

There are eight spectacular showers each year. Although individual meteors can be seen almost any night.
Meteor shower occur when the Earth passes through the orbit of a comet.
See this article from last year.

Here's the 2014 schedule: 2014 Meteor Showers

The next meteor shower is the Lyrids on the night of April 21.

Many years ago me, my wife, and first daughter were camping in Ohio Amish country to do some telescoping in a seriously dark part of the country during the Perseids shower.
I had the telescope set up to track Jupiter and observe the Jovian moons when a meteor detonated above us. There was no sound but the flash of light was so bright that for a moment I could read the label lettering on my telescope eyepiece.

BTW - If you are able to do a long time exposure of a meteor shower (requires a way to track the sky) you would see that all the meteor tracks originate from a single point in the sky. Below is a time exposure of the 2007 Perseids shower.
Image
Also note the a really numerous shower will have about one track per minute at best.

Yup. Reckon it's good policy to reaffirm your commitment to your spouse occasionally. I'm careful to tell people I'm gonna keep SWMBO 'till she's wore plumb out. But the woman just don't seem to appreciate the compliment.
