What is your opinion of Evolve?

Post by AlanM »

I'm not sure which side these people are on.
On the surface I agree with their code. However, I would like to know more about their stand on gun control laws.

Their site: Evolve Together

The "Code"

I believe that owning a gun is not just a right. It's a responsibility.
I believe that while anyone can own a gun, real gun owners use their heads.
I believe a gun in the wrong hands is a dangerous thing.
I will keep all of my guns unloaded, locked, and properly stored when not in use.
I will be trained in how to use my gun.
I will be answerable for every gun I own at all times.
I will talk to my kids about the fact that there are guns in our home and those guns will be properly stored.
I will speak out when
I see people who are using guns without using their heads.
I will respect what owning a gun means.
I will respect the code.

They are a bunch of antis. Their use of the phrases, "gun violence" and "common-sense reform" are dead giveaways.

Personally, I don't have much use for a gun that's unloaded and locked away. And I'm not going to join a group that wants me to agree to do that.

How I choose to store any firearm that I may have is my business. I'm not going to be looked down upon if I choose to keep fully loaded and easily accessible firearms all over my house.

However, I do like the stance that gun ownership is a responsibility. I hold the same opinion; just like I hold the opinion that you may shirk your responsibility if you are willing to deal with the consequences of the shirking.

This code is terrible. It's baseline position is that gun owners are an accident waiting to happen, which is just what the media wants the public to believe. And I agree with SHMIV that I'll store my guns however I want to store them.

And there are no positive things in this code. How about:
I believe that the second amendment is unambiguous and universal, and shall not be compromised or interpreted.
I believe that the right to self defense is fundamental.
I believe that a gun is an excellent self-defense tool.
I believe that guns save lives.

And so on.

I'm getting similar responses on other forums where I posted my question.
I agree, they are anti-personal protection, if not actually anti-gun.

@Palladin: Yeah, I caught that, too.

Kinda gives off that "living breathing constitution" vibe.

I agree - it sounds like an activist 'anti' cause rather than a friendly movement. And they DON'T understand the Second amendment - they forgot that part that says "shall not be infringed."

The more I think about that name, the more offended I am. They are implying that firearm owners are all knuckle-dragging troglodytes and that one has to "evolve" beyond that sub-human gun culture to become a member of their polite society of sheeple.

All rights require responsibility in exercising them. These partisans think there is something unique about the 2nd Amendment right. They think there is something specially evil about firearms that requires us all to tiptoe around them and be very afraid.

Here is part of the exposé from The Truth About Guns:
Like the laughable American Rifle and Pistol Association, Evolve was founded by opportunists in the wake of Sandy Hook, led by Jon and Rebecca Bond. Jon, a former ad man and marketing maven, is chief tomorroist at Tomorro LLC, a New York “value accelerator.” That’s about as much marketing-speak as I could cram into one sentence and still keep my breakfast down. Rebecca’s a contributing editor at Architectural Digest. As the New York Times’ Joe Nocera described the operation back in Evolve’s infancy,

Here is Jon and Rebecca’s big idea: They want to create an anti-violence organization — a “brand,” they call it — that will appeal to gun owners and nongun owners alike. “When you talk to gun owners, if your purpose is to make them feel bad, they will push back,” said Jon, “and you will lose them.”

“But,” chimed in Rebecca, “when you reframe the issue as ‘how can we save lives?’ the conversation shifts. Responsible gun owners and nongun owners both want to save lives. They have that in common. The end goal is to save lives.”

So the idea is, rather than beating people over the head Brady-style, Evolve will take more of a kid gloves approach to showing gun owners how misguided they are.

As advertisers and marketers, they had both worked with the liquor industry, and they had seen how outside pressure — from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, for instance — could change the larger culture so that once-acceptable behaviors became unacceptable. They had also seen how the industry had ultimately participated in safe drinking campaigns.

Of course! Get the NRA and gun companies to participate in gun safety campaigns! Why didn’t they think of that?

As they explained all this to me, Jon and Rebecca were joined by their friends Bob Barrie and Stuart D’Rozario, co-founders of the Minneapolis advertising agency Barrie D’Rozario Murphy, whose conference room they were all using. Another friend in the business, Claudine Cheever of Saatchi & Saatchi, was participating by phone.

Bob and Stuart were among those Jon and Rebecca had contacted early on. Stuart had flown to New York, where, over a long breakfast, they had devised a name for the brand:Evolve. If you put an “R” before and after the word “evolve” — which, indeed, they did when they designed the logo, in the lightest of type — it spells “Revolver.”

Clever. So they’re a gaggle of current and former ad execs taking a modern marketing approach to…what? Their Facebook page makes it quite clear. Evolve exists…

to unite concerned citizens working toward common sense reform. We are about action. We understand that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear arms—just not ALL arms.

I can save my own life by carrying my gun. Just let me do that and leave me alone.

Agreed. Another example of over-educated people who have never owned guns suddenly thinking that they know what is best for us.

Forget the "r" on both ends of the name. "D" would be more appropriate.

Look at their website, besides advocating locking and storing All weapons, unloaded like one would leave a car with no gas in it, they have few/no tips for safety. They make all gun owners out to be irresponsible.

Re-reading this, I realize that I may have misinterpreted the context in which they used the word "Responsibility".

Initially, I assumed that they were implying that Americans had a responsibility to own firearms. I'm inclined to agree with such a sentiment. As a nation, our rights are ensured by exercising our 2A rights, and we are responsible for ensuring our individual rights, for ourselves and our children.

Now, though, my guess they mean "owning a gun is a responsibility" in they same way that owning a dog, or having a child is a responsibility. In other words, sort of a voluntary burden, I suppose.

And, in and of itself, I still don't find fault with that. However, when put into the context of the rest of that "code", I find myself suspicious.

I suspect that they may have a different idea of responsibility than I do.

I will continue to store my loaded guns on the front lawn next to the "free candy" piles I also maintain for no clear reason whatsoever....I think I made some kind of a pact with the local ant queendoms, but things are really hazy from that meeting.

What are we talking about again? Oh, this group sounds like a bunch of shady folks, and I always trust the voices that make sounds in my head.

It is a political Trojan Horse. There is likely a gun control lobby group or similar using this organization as a front to steal away some gun owner support to have certain laws it wants passed. The last round of gun control law failures on the federal level has likely prompted some of the control groups to use this sort of thing to peel away some gun owners from others and thereby divide the voting bloc. Divide and conquer, as they say...

The fact that they would require all guns to be unloaded and stored away in a locked place is a dead giveaway something is amiss. You need at least one loaded and ready to go with an absolute minimum of effort in a home defense scenario. The vast majority of firearms owners I know would agree with that.

That's not to say all the concepts are bad. They use some quite logical and sound ones about general responsibility and educating kids about guns, etc. Their most specific of all rules though, is the one about locked and unloaded guns (see above).

Gun ownership is indeed a responsibility: I think every able-bodied, law abiding male of roughly military age should own and be proficient in the use of a firearm for the defense of home, state, and country, should the need arise.

If these people knew their ass from a hole in the ground, they’d already know the NRA is very active in gun safety (including teaching it to kids) and that gun makers already include gun locks and a wad of written safety info with every gun they sell. They’d also know that guns already are net lifesavers. They’d be advocating that schools, instead of suspending kids for any action that even suggests a gun, go ahead and bring the NRA’s Eddie Eagle program into the schools. So these people are dangerous idiots at best and probably soldiers in the gun grabber’s Trojan horse. It's just one more attempt by the "progressives" to get what they want by re-naming a proposition that reasonable people have already reject as odious; to control the outcome by controlling the language. I’ve said it before about compromising with the progressive/statist activists: Every time you “compromise” with these people, you give ground in the name of settling the matter; but the matter is never settled until they get what they want, and the more they get the more they want. So all you ever accomplish is to back up halfway to where they want you to be and wait until they come to push you back again on the next iteration. The Trojans shouldn’t have dragged that horse into the walls of Troy; they should have burned the damned thing and peed on the ashes. We should use the same approach with this crowd; figuratively speaking, of course. Of course, if we do, the gun grabbers will tell the world that we are a bunch of dangerous, mentally unstable right-wing extremists because we won't even do what's needed for the safety of society in general and the children in particular. So be it. They're going to do that anyway when we stop backing up; so we might as well stop now before we give up any more ground to the bastards.
