Having State Police run S/N's for you?
So I had a potential sale on vaguntrader the other day and I got a PM from a guy asking me if I'd mind providing the SN ahead of time so he could call the Staties and have them run the number for him, I'd never been asked that before and wasn't aware they'd even do that for people. Any body ever heard of or done that before? If so, where do you call?

I've never heard of that.
I'd be a little suspicious of that; but I also tend to wear my tin-foil hat with more frequency, these days.

If the SP won't tell an individual whether or not their name is clear in their database, ie expired protective orders, I damn sure can't see them running SNs for private sales... I smell a rat. Tell him he can have the SN when the money is in your grubby little hands, lol. This one gets

Now is the time for all good men to get off their rusty dustys...

There is this bill that's working it's way through the House:
SB 377, Sen. Reeves, gives a firearms dealer the OPTION of being able to check a gun for stolen when purchased from, transferred from, or traded with a private seller. Passed the Senate and is headed to the House.
I don't know the back story on this bill, so it might be a way to relieve the VSP of this task. Although, I can't find anything that says the VSP would do this now for a private sale.

Is it illegal to do so now? If not, a few bucks is all you need to run the number.
Sounds like a worthless bill meant to ferret out our guns to me.
Also, don't give the SN. I am sure there's plenty more buyers. No reason to let the government know about it.

Could be a reporter trying to drum up a story.
Could be a cop trying to make a legitimate purchase, and neglected to mention that he had access to that sort of information.
Could be a first time buyer that thinks that this is normal, for some unknown reason.
Could be some weird Bloomberg trap.
Who knows? It's an odd request, and it smells funny.

I've heard tell of retired LEOs and auxiliary Deputies getting the serial number run on a firearm, but I've always assumed it was an "unofficial favor".
