Looking for a Labrador

Post by Utah »

Looking for a Labrador retriever within couple hours of Winchester, VA, preferably English but American will do. We aren’t looking for a show dog, but we do want AKC…one MUST be Chocolate, other Yellow would be great but black isn’t out of the question. We had to put my namesake down on 11/30, still hurts to think about it, but time has come for us to move on. Thanks for the help.

I have shared goose blinds with a lot of labs. It always struck me how steady, level-headed and well behaved those dogs were compared to those rambunctious, silly labs you see as family pets. It's like the difference between an undisciplined 4-year old and a wise old man. I've been told that there is a big difference between labs bred as gun dogs and labs bred by puppy mills. There has got to be something to that.

If you buy a dog from an individual that you do not know, ask to see the father and mother work a little. The mother, although still nursing, should be able to..heel, sit, stay and come on command. Also, if you are wanting to train your new addition, try to get him/her at 6 weeks old and start training at 7 weeks (49 days). If the dogs are much older than that, they are getting too old to train (IMO and from Richard Wolters).

Check out Shady Grove Kennels in Remington VA.

Thanks for the replies, couple things I should add. Last one we had (Utah) was American and the best we could tell didn't come from a hunting line. I was fortunate to hunt over him one time with NO TRAINING what so ever, he did fine, not great but fine. We aren't looking for a hunting dog, but more a house dog, however if these have hunting lines in them that would be ok also. As for training, have that covered, Utah could do a lot...kept us busy...had a job.

Where I was coming from was that whether you hunt or not, it's nice to have a more intelligent, less hyperactive dog.
