Wisconsin eyes Everclear, strong liquor ban in '14

Post by ShotgunBlast »

Bipartisanship is overrated. You can't even make the effort to repeal bad legislation when all your time is spent preventing new bad legislation from being created.
Rep. André Jacque, R-De Pere, is sponsoring the bill in the Assembly. He’s working with Rep. Terese Berceau, D-Madison, who circulated an earlier version after being contacted by Wielichowski.
The left/right paradigm is so outdated now. I'm voting against anyone who is willing to pass stupid legislation like this. Even if this bill passed, ok I won't make my 190 proof alcohol, it'll just be 189 proof. Really? Doesn't anyone think of this stuff? I'm sorry this lady lost her son, but he did something stupid. :bangin:
MADISON — Jeff Wielichowski drowned in his family’s pool two summers ago after drinking a mix of Gatorade, Red Bull and Everclear with some friends.

At 190 proof, or 95 percent alcohol, Everclear packs more than twice the punch of the best-selling brands of whiskey, vodka and gin. And at about $18 per bottle, it has long been a popular ingredient in boozy punches served at parties in and around college campuses.

That may change soon in Wisconsin, where Wielichowski’s mother, Luanne Wielichowski, has channeled her grief into pushing state lawmakers to ban the sale of high-potent liquors like Everclear. A bill that would ban the sale of alcohol that’s 190-proof or higher is gathering bipartisan support in the Legislature and could be voted on early next year.

Last time I tried to buy Everclear at the local ABC store, they said they didn't carry it anymore. If that had happened back in my day, the local Jaycees would have disbanded.

Everclear has been banned in VA for a while... or, at least it was. Haven't been to a liquor store but once since end of 2006. I quit drinking liquor ( except for special occasions) in January of 07.

North Carolina has Everclear, though. .. or, at least they did. Not a far drive from Williamsburg. I had folks bringing it up all the time. And, that's what will happen in the land of Cheese.

Everclear is pretty much banned in all the states now.
Most states limit liquor to a proof of 151 max.
Which is why 151 rum became popular.

We used to get a quart of 190 proof ethanol every month to clean conductivity cells on the submarine while on patrol. It took the entire quart to clean those seven cells.
Also quite a few cans of fruit juice.

My bro just bought a couple bottles to thaw his windshield fluid reservoir last month. He lives just outside MKE and had to park his cars outside during a move. It was so cold there last month that the fluid froze solid. Everclear to the rescue!

I used to put a capful of it into the tank on my little gas pusher motor on my sailboat where it sat a lot and gathered condensation.

Oh crud, why'd I have to find out it's banned here? Now I've gotta go to NC and buy some. Didn't they learn from the '20s????

WHY are we traveling this path again.....I am not in favor of everclear as a drink of choice. You drink too much, too fast, you can die fast. But we did this once before. We are in the midst of a failed drug war. Why are we doing this again?!

I know other uses than to get snot out drunk for ever clear. I know it used to be used to distill the healing properties of herbs into a useable form. A 1/2 a tsp of echinasea infused everclear is not going to kill anyone. I wonder what they are using now for that. Perhaps vodka...I dunno.

Petty senseless reason to create a law. Many a person has killed themselves drinking something as simple as PBR. BTW as others have stated everclear is illegal in VA but in my experience there's no shortage of it so once again prohibition doesn't help anything.

'pends on how bad you wanna sail. When I first got into it back in the early '80s, I often sailed in the snow. As a rule, the crappier the weather the better the wind here in the mountains. Mountains and hollers do weird things to the wind on these TVA lakes in upper East Tennessee where I did my sailing, and in balmy summer weather there was often little or no wind. But when it was a-blowing that there blue snow sidewise up the lake, there was PLENTY enough wind to where a feller had to "hold a tight one" when going upwind. These days, given my advancing state of decrepitude, if I still had the thing, I'd probably never even see it except from May to September.

Those automotive uses for Everclear; couldn't one accomplish the same thing with rubbing alcohol? Seems it might be a tad cheaper.

91% isopropanol might work, I guess. My bro was a chem major, so I figured he picked the most effective alternative for the money.
