New Member from Woodbridge
Hi,
Fairly new to the VA area. Moved out here due to work. Originally form that crazy state many know as "Republic of California". I do miss the weather in San Diego, but not the laws. Looking forward to some range time and possibly get my feet wet in 3 gun competition. Any ranges close to me? Happy New Year!

Welcome, Dan! Hope we aren't going down CA's path as we speak!
No advice on ranges up there. I go down to Charlottesville to shoot.

Welcome. I'm right up the road from you in Fairfax County.
I grew up in San Diego, then lived in LA for a couple of years before moving out here in 1991. I think you'll like it out here.

Welcome from the other end of PWC...
Indoors, you can go to Sharpshooters in Springfield/Lorton...just off I95.,
Outdoors/longer range, the options are slim...but avIlable with some drive time or membership...

Welcome from a Woodbridge neighbor! We usually go to the NRA range. It's not too bad of a drive and the range is very nice along with the NRA firearms museum.

Wow, thanks for the welcome gents! I guess the NRA range isn't too far of a drive. I don't mind driving an hour or so for a decent range.

Re: New Member from Woodbridge
Hey! Welcome to the forum.
Like some folks already mentioned
Indoor / short range (25 yards)
Sharpshooters - Just 10-15 minutes
NRA - about 30-40 minutes based on traffic.
Blue Ridge Arsenal - Straight up 28. about 40-50 minutes based on traffic.
Outdoor / Longer range (100 yards)
Clarks Bro. - Free to use (sort of) Just a few minutes down the road. Can only shoot ammo you buy there.
Range 82 - 40 minutes down 28
Fredericksburg Rod & Gun Club - 30-40 minutes south
The Range - Fredericksburg 30-40 minutes south
If you are military or have a sponsor, Quantico Gun Club goes out to 1,000 yards.
If you are feeling adventurous, there are 2 ranges that go out to 400 yards and 1 that goes out to 1000 yards within about 1.5 to 1.75 hours away.

Welcome. It's a bit of a drive, but I think this place in WV has a good 3-gun intro class plus plenty of matches. Well worth checking out...dcallender wrote: Looking forward to some range time and possibly get my feet wet in 3 gun competition.

PNTC Web Site wrote: Intro To 3GUN
With the exception of the NRA’s Camp Perry, Peacemaker hosts more competitions than any other shooting complex in the USA. Peacemaker also holds over 10 Multi-Gun matches per year with several national level matches each year.
With our involvement in the shooting sports and knowledge of Multi-Gun, we understand that new shooters interested in shooting Multi-Gun for the first time are often confused by multi-gun rules, scoring, firearms requirements, gear requirements, safety concerns etc.
In this unique class, students will begin by learning proper gun safety, basic competition techniques and gear setups. Rules and scoring methods for multi-gun competitions will be covered, as well. This course will also teach basic starting positions, mounts and target acquisitions for each firearm, techniques for shooting each firearm and techniques for transitioning to and from each firearm type.
Reloading for each firearm will be taught, as well as movement and shooting from various positions. Students will complete the course by shooting an actual course of fire, similar as to what they would encounter in a competition.
Competition is one of the "great levelers" of ego.

I recently moved to Dumfries (just down the interstate from Woodbridge) from Alexandria. I'm planning on giving the Quantico range a try later this spring. I'll try to post a writeup after a trip or two.

I wish I did. I don't even have a work bench until my coffee table gets cleared. LOL
What rifle and rail set do you have? Some rifles, like DPMS and Sig, don't have a standard barrel nut on their AR platforms. Sig wont even sell the proper wrench. Unless you make one you are out of luck on the Sigs.

I got a really good deal on a M&P15 OR. Attaching a Troy Alpha Rail on it, along with replacing the gas block.MarcSpaz wrote:I wish I did. I don't even have a work bench until my coffee table gets cleared. LOL

You should be good to go with the regular barrel nut wrench. I have one if you don't. If you find someone near by who has a vise and is willing to have us over, I can bring it to save you $50 if you don't already have one.

Welcome Dan! My wife and I are ex-Chula Vista so you have neighbors here! I will always miss San Diego, but not the infested areas. I lost a lot of console radios while living there.dcallender wrote:Hi,

If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom.

There seem to be a lot of former San Diego people here. I grew up close to Chula Vista myself.
