Christmas arrived early here this year - I just got the notice that the Garand I ordered in July from the CMP is finally shipping today.
Any tips for care / breaking it in after it arrives?

Re: Garand
Don't touch it! They're prone to exploding! Send it to me so I can test it a few years!

July?? Man, that is a long wait. I'll be you're itchy, itchy, itchy.
Take it apart, clean it, lube it properly, shoot it with GI or GI equivalent ammo.
The CMP forums have excellent info/instructions on field stripping/cleaning/lubing your M1 Garand.
Oh, based on my experience, one won't be enough.

You WILL send pictures,correct?
Can't offer much more than M1A did, but the CMP still has excellent ball ammo for the Garand. The Greek HXP is very good stuff and at .50 a round is a good deal. Others such as Hornady also sell rounds specially loaded for the Garand.
Enjoy!

Re: Garand
I got one not long ago, but have not had it to the range yet.
One of the things that has been noted in some of the reading that I've done is that modern commercial ammo has the potential to damage the operating rod because of higher pressure. The website http://www.garandgear.com/ has a lot of good info on care and maintenance of the M1, as well as some products that they sell. Look at the link to the article about shooting commercial ammo. They sell a ported gas screw and provide data about it. I plan to try it out when I make it to the range, as I have several boxes of commercial .30-06.
There are several places on the internet to find out when your gun (well, the receiver anyway) was manufactured. That may give you some perspective on it's part in history.

So.....did it arrive? Tell us what you got! Have you dated it based on it's serial number?
