I never understood the mindset behind nixing the F22. Same idiots killed the space program and now we have to hitch a ride from other countries. That was productive. LOL Maybe Rassia will let us barrow some MiG 23's since they are done with them.

There are some legitimate reasons for thinking about nixing the F-22.

Without offering an opinion either way, here are a couple of considerations:

- It's expensive, both to produce and to maintain. Is it better to buy a lot more good F-16s and more really good F-15s, or just a few super super good F-22s? Quality or quantity?

- Compare the range, payload, and other capabilities between the F-22 and the F-15. One of the F-22's strengths is stealth, but compromises had to be made to get that. As an aeronautics professor told me: "there is no free lunch."

- The F-22 was designed for a major conflict against an advanced adversary. Its development started during the cold war, when the Berlin wall was still standing. Our last two wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) didn't really need all that the F-22 could provide (IOW, the F-22 was overkill). Are we going to fight the last battle, or will we go to war with a superpower? A very legitimate question that by itself will spark a long discussion.

- Some of the calls to cancel the program came during development. At the time, it was a high technical risk, and had suffered many delays and overruns. I'm not saying it was better or worse than other programs, but it boils down to a question that often gets asked during an acquisition program: do we go with a proven, low-risk solution (F-15, F-16) or a higher risk program (F-22)?

I agree ,the soviets had the idea of having a buttload of cheap tanks instead of a few better tanks and imo,there is nothing wrong with the aircraft we currently have

On the other hand, if that same "stick-to-what-you-know-because-new-stuff-is-risky-and-expensive" logic had been applied (and it was suggested) way back during the development of the F-15 and F-16, where would we be now? And where will we be if the Chinese (or the Russians, or some other country inimical to the USA's interests) come up with something even half-way better than the F-15 & F-16 if we decline to develop the F-22?
