Leather Squeaks

Post by Hammer »

Bought a leather holster for my 1911 and a good bull hide belt from A Better Belt, USA. Now I squeak as I walk. I expect I should be conditioning the holster somehow to minimize or hopfully eliminate the squeaking? What to use?

I had that same issue several years ago...I used "Saddle Soap" that a friend had . Worked it into the inside of the holster. I applied it several times and it did loosen up the leather. Have applied it a few more times and now the holster is more comfortable to wear and is "Quiet " too. Any leather shop should have it and probably even Wally World.

Any possibility that you can bake the leather holsters like you do baseball gloves to break in the leather?

Avoid heat for leather holsters, and most leather goods. It dries them out, and causes them to crack unless you put a liberal amount of oil/conditioning on them. You can use Aussie Wax which both conditions, and makes it water resistant. Plus, you can use Neetsfoot oil to soften the interior. Both require no heat.

Recommend caution on softening leather. The collar and whatnot need to be still to allow for reholstering as well as preventing a deflection into the trigger guard as you reholster. If the leather deforms into the trigger area as you're reholstering, it can go bang.

The squeak is from leather rubbing on leather. Around seams (as well as around the clips and loops), put in a little talc powder (not baby powder unless you want to smell fresh), rub it in, flex the leather, then blow off the excess. That should help lubricate. Also, might want to try rubbing wax paper as an alternative.

Over time, it will go away.
