rifle season

Post by ilaurain »

Hello, I am new to Virginia and am renting a home in northern Harrisonburg, Lacey springs area. It is very hilly and mountainous here. I am having a hard time understanding the state websites for hunting rules and regulations. Can anyone help me out a little. When does rifle season start for deer? Can I hunt where I live with a 30.06 and or 12guage slug?

I used to hunt (stopped reading the regs. when I stopped hunting) and it seemed to me in VA it is different county to county. It's like the counties have their own regs. vs. the state setting them up. What is legal (weapon, distance away from the road or buildings you can hunt/fire) was different county to county.

If its still that way, be sure you've got thing right for the county you're hunting in.

There is also a difference if you are west or east of the blueridge. If you want this stuff on the web, go to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website. All the state hunting and fishing regs are there as well as some of the local regs. Your county should be able to tell you anything not posted on the DGIF website.

the digest that was linked in post #2 is the way to go. The web pages have most of the data, but can be a little less than fully informative. The digest has much more detail.

and yes, things are HIGHLY variable county to county, much more so as you get near higher population density.

What county are you hunting in that will determine what you can use. I live in Prince William but hunt in Fredrick county. PW count is shotgun or muzzel loading only during rifle season, but Fredrick county alows me to shoot my rifle or any combination that I would like.

I looked it up and Rockingham has no restrictions, but here is the link for you to go to that gives you all the county and city restrictions and if you do not see the county or sity then they fall under State guidelines which leaves it open to your choice.

Well it is all very informative, just sometimes to much so. It gets confusing with to much information.

It looks like I can use which ever I choose to. Afterall I live on a 165 acre farm with lots of hills and the nearest neighbor is a quarter mile away.

Rockingham County is west of the blueridge. I like loud noises so bows just don't do it for me. Can't help you there.
