New to VA and Floyd County
Hi all,
I'm from NJ (sorry), my wife originally from Ireland, and we bought a second home in Floyd last year. We're both retired, me from a career in synthetic lubricants and my DW from travel. We intend to move permanently to beautiful VA, but for now we need to keep the NJ home for family reasons so we go back and forth a lot. We just love the Blue Ridge Mountains and have 25 acres with a view to die for.
While I was active in competition shooting in my teens, I never owned a gun (did I mention I'm from NJ?). Now that I am in the land of the free I finally bought a Remington 870 HD 12 ga for home defense - not that Floyd is unsafe, just very remote. I'd like to get a handgun as well but there is this residency issue. According to the ATF, for the purpose of buying firearms I am a VA resident while in VA, but FFLs will only accept a VA drivers license, so I'm caught in a Catch 22. Oh well, in time.
Just found this website and it looks like a friendly place. I look forward to hanging around.

In NJ, the bad guys are armed and the households are alarmed. In VA, the households are armed and the bad guys are alarmed.

If you don't want to wait to purchase a handgun you can always go the private route!

I think you can declare yourself a VA citizen. Just spend the minimal amount of days in VA each year. I think its ridiculously low, like 30 or so.
Plus, you'd save on income tax vs NJ. A great way to abandon the state and take your tax money elsewhere!
