Prior military, concealed carry license...do I still need a

Post by CDRGlock »

I just want a clarification. I am prior military, have concealed carry licenses in VA/FL, and a VA resident. Am I still required to take the hunter's safety course?

Thank you.

The purpose of the hunter's safety class is that it is one of the ways to demonstrate knowledge/proficiency so you can get the CHP. If you already have the CHP, you don't need the class. IANAL.

Are you asking if you need to take the course to hunt legally? What do you want to do that makes you think that you may require this course?

If you want to hunt, no.

If you want a CHP, you dont need a hunters safety course, but only some safety course. That said, in your particular circumstance, your military service may qualify, or your other CCWs.

Wish I could be more help.

Then all you need is a hunting license. Go to walmart and buy one!

Hunter Education Requirements

You are required to complete hunter education before buying a hunting license if:

you are 12-15 years of age, or
you have not previously purchased a regular hunting license.

This section shall not apply to persons while on horseback hunting foxes with hounds but without firearms.
Here's a link to several different hunter education courses - one is free and online.

YES.

Prior service will get you a CHP without additional training, but a hunting license requires a hunter safety course.

^^^ I stand corrected. Thanks for the info! I had had a hunter safety course as a child of 12, but I don't remember ever having been questioned when I purchased a license. Is this law relatively new?

Also, as I understood it, MD (not that I will go there to give them any of my money anymore) did not give me a license unless I could show a hunter education course, even though I had a VA license.

Again, it leaves me to wonder if this law is relatively new.

I moved to VA in 1995, and at that time I had to certify that I had taken a hunter safety course, or previously held a hunting license in another state. So it is not a new regulation.

When you go to buy a license online you'll get this item at the bottom of the what licenses you want page.

I had a hunting license back prior to the need for the hunter safety course. Since I lost the license I had to take the course 5 years ago. It's two nights, you take a test, and boom, you get a big cert and one that fits in your wallet. I found out that if you shoot an animal and it jumps on to another person's property prior to expiring, you have to now call a game warden to get said animal. Prior to this, you used to just be able to go and get the critter without any hand holding.

I just completed the online course. It was actually pretty good, though I never plan to hunt with a muzzleloader.

Or you ask the land owner for permission to enter their property.
