Heritage & Marksmanship
Project Appleseed is a nationwide program that teaches rifle marksmanship skills that have been passed down from generation to generation and reconnects Americans with the people and events of colonial America. Participants are taught skills that allow a Rifleman to be accurate out to 500 yards using a standard rifle with iron sights and surplus ammunition. This ability is traditionally known as mastering the “Rifleman's Quarter Mile” and is an American tradition that
has been part of this nation from its very first days. So join us and hear some little-known Revolutionary War history, reaffirm your heritage, and make America a better place.

Added to the VGOF event calendar.
Re: Rifle Training Event at a Beautiful Range in Boone, NC
If you want to improve your rifle shooting (beginner or experienced) an Applesseed is a great way to do it.
Even if you are (notice I didn't say think you are) a pretty good shot with a rifle there's still little things to learn or relearn that will improve your shooting.
Be sure to visit the Appleseed/RWVA website though and read/follow the helpful instructions on what to bring. You don't want to be distracted by weather, bugs, aches and pains (the second day after all the position shooting on day 1)
This is rifle shooting - not from a bench at the range. Rifle shooting like you'd do it in the woods. Off hand, sitting/kneeling and prone.
Everything you learn at 25 meters helps at longer distances as well.

Sold me! I signed up and will be heading down there in Nov. Sounds like an interesting mix of rifle fundementals and history. may need orthopedic surgery after shooting 400 rounds of 30-06 over 2 days though.

Re: Rifle Training Event at a Beautiful Range in Boone, NC
Great to hear it! You could bring a .22lr such as a ruger 10/22 as well and plan to shoot that the first day. Wouldn't want you to need surgery.

Re: Rifle Training Event at a Beautiful Range in Boone, NC
Is the rifle an M1 Garand?? If so, you'll learn to use that sling and you'll be amazed at how well the sling, plus the solid firing position you learn to build with it, will help absorb recoil. In warm weather, I shoot mine while wearing a t-shirt. Used to be (prior to the Coumadin) I didn't even get a "raspberry". Now even that little old AR15 puts a raspberry on my shoulder.
My first Appleseed I shot my M1A and my youngest son shot his FAL. Ammo was a lot cheaper in 2006.

Was planning to take the Garand and the 1903-A3 Springfield. I shoot both regularly but have never shot 400 rounds in 2 days which is what seems to be typical for the clinic. Am really looking forward to it!
Might bring the M1 carbine or Enfield but have a bunch more 30-06 than those calibers.

As M1A4ME said, once you sling up properly your shoulder will no longer take the brunt of the recoil, and you can easily shoot all day. The course of fire was originally designed for the Springfield, and many bolties shoot qualifying scores every year.
Some day I'll get a real rifle like one of yours.

In my experience, the 03 will "seem" to kick more than the M1 Garand. For me its a stock/fit thing. The M1 just fits me. Feels better than my M1A and I shoot it better, too.
Re: Rifle Training Event at a Beautiful Range in Boone, NC
The M1 Garand will work great for this program. There will be a course of fire in which you will need two magazines, one with 8 rounds and the other with 2 rounds. You can buy a 2 round clip for the Garand or learn to criss cross 2 rounds in the 8 round clip and be able to insert it in the rifle.

Re: Rifle Training Event at a Beautiful Range in Boone, NC
I bought some of the 2 round and 5 round magazines for my M1 when I first got it. None of them work. I thought maybe the M1 had some worn parts. But they don't work in any of my M1's (3 Springfields and 2 H&R's).
When I say, "don't work right" what I mean is you can insert the two rounds and insert it into the rifle but it will not lock in like a loaded 8 round clip will lock in. The follower had to be depressed fully when inserting the clip (the 8 round clip will do it, but the 2 and 5 round clips won't) in order to lock the clip in. If you learn to play with it, push down, pull back and let (slightly forward) the op rod while using your other hand to keep the clip pushed all the way in the clip will lock. That's just a pain in the you know what. The two crossed rounds are easier do and the follower will be pushed down and allow the clip to lock in.
This is what it looks like.

I love Boone NC. I dated a Bohemian hippie chick who liked guns, and camping...
But she was just too much for me...
But I still love that area.

Thanks for the tip, I had never heard of loading the Garand with 2 crossed rounds. Will be playing with that tonight!
Is the 03-A3 a choice for this event? Only holds 5 rounds of course.

Yes. The original Army marksmanship instruction program on which Appleseed's method is based was created for the 03-A3. Rather than load 2&8, you load 5&5.
The purpose of the two magazines is to force a mag change during the 10-round rapid-fire stages of the COF. Partly because of the heritage of the Springfield and the M1, but mostly because it forces you to break and re-acquire your natural point-of-aim.

Re: Rifle Training Event at a Beautiful Range in Boone, NC
Ok, just completed Day 1.
Awesome event! Great folks, love the history intermixed with great rifleman training. I learned a lot!
1). Trigger control
2) Proper use of sling
3). Natural point of aim and how to adjust for it.
4). Position tips
Was a bit surprised that I was shooting the only centerfire rifle (Garand). Everybody else was rimfire, many with scopes. The Garand performed flawlessly and my appreciation for this great rifle only grew. The instructors loved it too.
The participants were mainly families. It was great to see husbands, wives and children doing this together. A very good thing.
Looking forward to Day 2!
