Sugestions for Concealed carry that does not destroy my back
Ok ladies and gents. I have been carrying my lovely Kahr CM9 for two years now. I love my little gun and I would love to keep carrying it. However as I tend to have children climbing all over me and my back is most seriously annoyed even carrying my little gun hurts. Sometimes the amount it throws me off hurts to the tune of a day in bed 800mg of ibuprophen and an additional prescription muscle relaxer and a very sleepy mommy (not a good thing when one has four children). I am seeing a chiropractor and I seem to be getting better.
This is the rub. I find myself leaving the Karh at home, because I am afraid of how much it is going to hurt to carry it. I have to force myself to do it. That is not good. It used to be I carried as a rule. Now pain has made me flighty.
I am open to suggestions. If you think a certain holster would help, a certain carry method might help. If you think a smaller gun would help (oh what a shame have to buy another gun!). I just want to be prepared and one is not prepared if one leaves the gun in the safe because it hurts too much to carry.
Thank yall so much!

What's your current carry method? A hip holster? Maybe try carrying in a purse? The size of a Kahr 9mm might be too much for an ankle holster - maybe find a nice little .380 and an ankle holster?

Re: Sugestions for Concealed carry that does not destroy my back
Most of the time I have carried in a belly band back of hip carry (if your navel is 12 and your back bone is 6 I am carrying at 4:30). I have a belt pack, but that tends to pull on my body in ways that are not the best (better than the belly band and 4:30 carry, but the draw is slower).
Thanks for the suggestions!

I looked at them before! I used to carry like that for a while (not so convenient though for nursing a baby!). They did not have my gun at the time, but I could check them out again--perhaps they have gotten one for my weapon.
My little bundle does not nurse so much in public anymore (covered up--no one sees anything!). She is big enough now to wait till we get home and enjoy a sippy cup when we are out.

Consider a pocket holster in the hip pocket of some cargo shorts. That shouldn't bend your back.

I got my Mom a Sig Sauer p238 Desert. She usually carries it in her purse but it's small enough that you could do a hip carry with it and not be to much of a problem.

It's the behind the hip that is your problem. Carrying right at 3:00 would help. Also, even as a woman, you would do well to wear a double-layer belt. That would hold the pistol tight against your body and prevent it from sagging outward or riding down onto your hips.

The human spine carries weight best when its loaded is as close as possible to your center mass and the weight is pulling straight down.
Think about it like this. You have a pretty good idea how long you can hold/carry a pile of books. Try holding 3 or 4 books in your hands with your arms stretched out. In just a few minutes your arms a numb and you have a backache from hell. Take those same books, throw them in a backpack and now you can take those books everywhere all day.
Make sense?
Get a left handed IWB holster and put it on the small of your back perfectly inline with your spine. This lightens the load and with the lefty IWB, you can still draw with your right.
Another plus beside for easing the load... if you are getting mugged and going for your gun may put you in more danger and a bad guy pats down your pockets, they wont accidentally find your weapon and disarm you. Or if someone robbing you at gun point, you will look like you are complying and reaching for a wallet in your back pocket.
This works with outer wear and slide holsters as well, but if it is not concealed, I wouldn't recommend keeping it behind you. You don't want someone sneaking up and grabbing it.

Make sure your holster and belt are made for women, with a curve in them. Belts a,de for men WILL cause back pain (something I learned when my wife was taking training from Kathy of corneredcat.com.)
I happen to have chronic back pain, and I find some holsters sit right on the nerves that run at 1600. Try so,etching like the Supertuck - works well on men and women, and it works wonderfully for me,

Don't laugh, but you're a mom... carrying in a "fanny pack" wouldn't be out of the question.

Re: Sugestions for Concealed carry that does not destroy my back
I have not used an IWB holsters yet.
I currently carry on a belt OWB with a paddle from black hawk. On my 3:00. I have not had any problems... As woman it imprints a lot if I don't wear a very loose shirt unfortunately.
I hope you feel better and are able to find a solution that works for you.
My last ditch method is in the purse, but don't like that way cause the purse can be taken away from me.

Might want to reconsider small of back carry; if you fall, or are pushed into something, you can hurt your spine.

Thank you guys so much. I did not know that about women's belts......perhaps that is part of the problem. I have been using men's belts. I will try the fanny pack option as well.

Alight here is my recommendation. Maybe this is a balance thing. Your back is being pulled to one side so try carrying some weigh on your weak side maybe pare mag, large smart phone ect. Best thing is it cost you nothing to try. I also recommend IWB like others have. I can't conceal carry but when I'm at home I switch to IWB for comfort.

That may be an option for sure. The CrossBreed Super Tuck and the Galco King Tuck are awesome IWB holsters. I have osteoarthritis in my knees, hips, and spine. I wear the Galco King Tuck daily and for 15-16 hours at a time. It is so comfortable that I often forget I am even carrying. It distributes the weight across a large section of waistline and the leather backing protects the skin from irritation.Mindflayer wrote:Make sure your holster and belt are made for women, with a curve in them. I would try the Galco first, since it is half the price of the CrossBreed. If it works, upgrade to the CrossBreed after a few months.
I know you are just trying to lookout for her on this one... but wouldn't it be obvious that if someone falls or is pushed down, whatever part of the body takes the direct impact would be injured anyway? Not to mention, I am about 40 years old and I can count the number of times I have fallen or been pushed to the ground in the last 25 years on one "finger".
